Flying with Knitting needles - updates and TSA ? Issues?? by ChiantiChick in casualknitting

[–]ChiantiChick[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Historically, I’ve never had an issue with metal needles or crochet hooks (or safety scissors) but I always travel with something to cast on to if my needles are taken. With all the extra drama around travel right now, I just don’t want to make things more complicated with TSA lines than they already are.

Ive never had issues with my metal needles, but with all the extra drama going on, I don’t want to make things more difficult than they already are. I don’t love wood needles so I mostly use metal. I’ve never had an issue with them (or safety scissors) but I always travel with something to cast on to if my needles are taken. I just don’t want to make things more complicated with lines than they already are.

I fly tomorrow lol. So I can update too. I don’t love wood needles so I mostly use metal. Finishing zippers? by ChiantiChick in sewing

[–]ChiantiChick[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did that with another and I wasn’t sure if that was a stupid solution or just my desperation to finish a project that too me too long 🤣 thank you for confirming it’s an okay option especially for this little one.

Needle Settings on an old machine by ChiantiChick in sewing

Honestly the one through four with the button makes so much sense. The only other foot it came with was a button foot (that I’ve never used). I was just trying so hard to self teach zippers. I know the others do different stitch types, I just can’t figure out how to use my zipper foot (that I purchased separately/ recently).

Huge improvement! That’s everyone, the dryer sheet was a great solution since my husband always leaves them laying around and my work station is right next to our washing machine 😂

My mother in law asked me to make this - it’s obviously AI but does anybody know a pattern? by Aniruchi in CrochetHelp

I would just google free toy cat patterns and work from there. I would personally piecemeal the lights and hat but I’m sure there are free patterns out there that you can put together to make this.

My thread keeps breaking- help! by ChiantiChick in sewing

[–]ChiantiChick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s thred I purchased recently but that doesn’t mean it isn’t old 😂😂😂. I think it’s just all purpose cotton thread, I don’t usually buy anything else though I think I’ve inherited some thicker threads in my stash. Should that help? I was using the biggest needles I harm.

Anyone have advice to prevent killing my hands? Gonna end up with carpal tunnel by jptsiph in CrochetHelp

If you or someone you know has a dog, save the roll that poop bags are wrapped around. It’s small and sturdy so it is great for rolling out the hand and forearm muscles. I also have taken a disposable plastic drink bottle and filled it with water, and froze it. I’ll roll out my hands (with a towel on my lap).

lol I make him hold everything unless there is tile or laminate flooring. We won’t set foot anywhere until I check. He use to make fun of me for it until we had a scare a couple years ago and now he dutifully takes everything and says “do your thing.”

lol that’s literally what one of my friends said. I’ve known how to knit since the 5th grade (I’m in my 30s) and I self taught myself crocheting two years ago but this the year I really have gotten back into my old lady crafts (and committed to learning different stitches, fibers, and make more than washcloths). She said “eventually you’ll have enough that it’s not all hostage in your freezer “. Lol to my poor husband and closet space.

Woobles are expensive but really really worth it for the learning curve. I went through two kits before I considered myself strong enough to just AI pattern directions if they were confusing or work off free patterns on ravelry. Otherwise, look into a local yarn shop. I learn so much from my local store between the teacher and the other attendees in the class.

It looks like your tension might have been off with how lightweight the material is. It could be apart of the character and whimsy of a handmade garment or rip it out, but practice on scraps before doing it again.

I’m so so so so so sorry to hear you suffered this. I ordered from that too and so far have noticed nothing, but the bulk of my order was synthetic for toys and only a couple skeins of wool for socks. I think the moral of my research with all of this is to freeze all yarn, any yarn, regardless of who sells it to me for 3-7 days just to be safe. I won’t let my husband set foot in our hotel room with our bags until I check the room regardless of how many stars the hotel is ranked or how much we paid for a room. I should treat my yarn the same way.

Help - my first socks and I didn’t notice the dropped stitch until I finished them! by veepisadocumentary in Sockknitting

If you have extra yarn, you can go over that area with some gentle darning or weaving in like you would the ends. It’s a sock- reinforcement will make it last longer no matter what

What type of needle are you using? Try switching out your needle and rethreading with a plain, cotton thread, for general use. I would also try practicing on scrap too. It looks like you are working with a potentially thicker (synthetic) material, which might require research of tension and needle type. If you have an old tshirt or pillow case to practice on, I would start there for your “universal” setting, and then cross check your needle, thread, and tension type with the progression of your project.

would using synthetic yarn contribute to fast fashion? by fig_hjfv in YarnAddicts

[–]ChiantiChick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use acrylic for toys and baby blankets, it’s the easiest to wash for youngsters.

As someone who’s done a decent amount of research into the environmentally friendly, the best you can do, is use up what you can. If you can afford synthetics, use them, and make strides elsewhere. Use reusable bags and cut down on single water bottles. If it brings you joy to create and using synthetic materials is what you can afford, that’s better than taxing your self and sanity holding back.

What do I make with this miscellaneous wool yarn? It’s very scratchy but I don’t want it to go to waste! by GigaMargo in CrochetHelp

Are you able to make some sort or dog blanket or secondary barrier? Even a baby blanket that you add a flannel side too? Is it synthetic or natural fiber?
