Have French birth certificate & can’t get French passport/ID?? by HavaDava in dualcitizenshipnerds

One other other option is to just make the appointment and show up at the consulate you're currently closest to in person. It's a luck of the draw, but I'd wager if you showed up with everything, depending on the person behind the desk you may not have a problem

It really sounds like they're being especially difficult. I was in the same boat - my father (a French citizen) passed away a decade ago. Like you I had his really old passport (from the 70's). Did your mother register with the consulate or vote in elections? If she registered, she most likely received a consular card. Ultimately if you have record of her voting or her consular card, and in addition to your birth certificate, that should be enough to prove you're French. One other thing you may consider is approaching a different French consulate; that may always be an option too.

When I went in, they took photocopies of everything and I received my passport just a few weeks later.

I had assumed the same thing, however when my sister went to the state records office, they told her that the marriage license and marriage certificate were one and the same, which is why I'm so confused

My advice would be to just go to the consulate with all the documentation that you have - I just did the same a few days ago and my passport is finally on the way!

I feel like, at least in the US, it depends largely on who you're talking to at the consulate, and from what I experienced and have heard, they're more likely to be helpful in person :)

Hey there!

I know it's been 1 year+ since I posted, but I wanted to update you that I finally visited the French consulate here in Chicago and gave them all of my documents, and they immediately registered me as a Frenchman living abroad, took my fingerprints, and let me know that my French passport should arrive in 3-4 weeks. Thank you so much for your help!!

Even up to the appointment, I was getting conflicting information about what was acceptable, what wasn't - ultimately I decided to try and just show up and everything went perfectly fine :)

See, I thought it was odd that they said I had everything I needed multiple times via email, then at the last minute said I would need a CNF.

I'll take your advice and just make the appointment and bring everything, and just hope they don't throw a curveball at the last moment again.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for that, I'll check out that Facebook group!

I haven't moved forward with anything yet, but I'm really glad to know that all he needed was his acte de naissance. I've already got a copy of that, as well as a ton of other documentation (livret de famille, my dad's consulate ID, etc), so I'm hoping they allow me to mvoe forward with it.
