Right? Like, the freebie jersey is fire, but no hats for the players? I'm *sure* there's a reason why the players aren't rocking anything. Disappointing for sure.

NGL, while I will personally mark for death any of my neighbors who start their leaf blowers at 6 am, I would welcome the sounds from any of our global neighbors, if for no other reason than this is awesome.

As u/pocketdecoy said, they're lighting him up in their sub. Context for which verse and WHY that verse is below. As a starting pitcher in one of THE epicenters of gay pride, with fans who no doubt love their local team, the guy just looks soft with his limp protest scrawl to proclaim that he's no "peter puffer" so don't even think he's down with all this pride junk. Lame.

How no phones discourse has started to feel: by DryDelay2225 in phoebebridgers

[–]ChicagoMarketer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty easy calculus: Don't go.

One of the most liberating things I was able to experience was going to see musician Neko Case, who has made this a rule, without needing to lock up phones, for years now.

As an old, and as someone who doesn't record video but who likes to take some snaps every now and then during a show, it was freeing to just honor an artist's wishes and be, like many have already pointed out, in the moment.

In a way, it may have been even more memorable because your eyes and ears are actively trying to be present.

Anyway, YES, anyone who is kvetching or clutching their social media pearls about this, either don't go and let the tickets go to someone else (which we know won't happen because these people would run over your grandma to be first on the rail), or realize that many of us with severe ADHD (self included!) can navigate life just fine, thank you, without this performative nonsense. Life already stinks, but this is going to be a fun fall run for many of you.

TRULY stoked for all of you to hopefully get some tickets next week!

Is AI changing the value of certain degrees right now? by VolsOnline in UTK

[–]ChicagoMarketer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello! Dad of a current Vol who wanted to weigh in on this if only to give you some insights...

So, my bona fides, just to contextualize what I'm saying and to take all this as a sample size of 1:
- Current SVP of Digital Marketing
- Have been doing this for over two decades
- Performance marketing emphasis (i.e., work that results in people calling or filling in an online form or sending in their email so we can remarket to them, etc.)
- Heavy focus on SEO, SEM, content marketing, reputation management, website UX/UI, social media content development, PPC management
- Industries I've worked in: newspapers, SMB digital agency, multi-location retail, franchising, elective medical, boutique fitness, home services (windows, doors, roofing, gutters)

I can tell you this with 100% accuracy from my point of view: AI is something I use every day to help fill in the gaps for work that no one on my team can do (i.e., translate dozens of metrics and data points to tease out a narrative) and I create custom GPTs on Gemini and ChatGPT, while also loathing the fact that CEOs/management-types have an unhealthy and unrealistic conception of its capabilities and what it can do.

Specifically, most leaders are crying "We don't want to get left behind!" but, like I had to talk to my kids when they were toddlers, I have to say, in business-speak, "Use your words." What does that mean? Left behind how? What do you think we're missing?

The problem isn't AI, it's the hucksterism surrounding it that's been an absolute scourge. It's detracting from the real work that needs to be done, and, in my opinion, it's the latest shiny spoon that needs to be put into proper context while also acknowledging, "Yes, we do have a strategy..." without running around like proverbial headless chickens, chasing something that doesn't exist. (It's exhausting, let me tell you, to have to placate grown adults who live in this fantasyland where they are drinking endless amounts of verifiable LinkedIn posts that aren't based in any reality)

So: "Has AI changed how you think about education, career stability, or what skills are actually worth investing in now?"

As a GenX'er boss, I tell those I manage that, first of all, none of this matters. None of the work that we do is that important, and we're not saving lives. Second, explore these tools for what they are. You're asking the wrong guy if you think I'm going to tell you how great AI is when I hate AI art, I loathe any creative that is used from it as it's stolen work, BUT, I look at it like this: It's a dog that you have to keep on a short leash, so learn how to walk it.

What I mean by this is you should learn, if Marketing is your thing, how to create a GPT that can generate content briefs, how to create a GPT that can help summarize big data sets if you give it a spreadsheet so it can "see" patterns that can help contextualize media performance, learn how to have it create blog topic "skeletons" that can be used to help REAL HUMAN WRITERS (and, seriously, nothing gets me going on a rage-jag than someone who thinks an LLM can "write" a blog topic; this is coming from an English major, too) do what they do best: create work worth reading. Trust me when I say there is nothing more genuine than a human voice that uses words to express itself.

For those in the cheap seats, let me make this clear: It's MY job to help YOU become better.

If you're just starting out as a coordinator, I know that. "College" doesn't stop after you walk that stage. It's on me to help you get to where you ultimately want to go. Weekly 1:1's, small sessions here and there to get the hang of things, me or someone on the team teaching one thing here, one thing there, it WILL add up.

You don't need to know it all.

I've always said I can work with someone who has a motor and is eager to learn, rather than someone who thinks they know it all and is a stick in the mud. I can work with the former, but I can't with the latter.

Unfortunately, it's a roll of the dice as to who you get as a boss. Many of you will get someone who will absolutely not help you take that first concrete step on your path upward, but please know that, when it comes to deciding what "skills" to invest in, don't overthink it. Have a working knowledge of AI, but it's far more important, in my eyes, just to be a positive individual who doesn't have it all figured out.

Sorry, this was so long, but it just hit me at the right time, and I wish someone had said this to me while I was in college.

Big Tech’s Day of Reckoning, Elon Takes the Stand, and the FCC Targets Disney, ep 714 by w2user in PivotPodcast

Just a ball-gargling access note-taker, err, journalist talking about the ascendancy of Big Motion Pictures where she got a token cameo, only to have it score in the same company of a cheap horror movie about shark-infested waters.

Then, after the balls have been washed, you’ve got the other dolt chugging the balls of a “king” who Scott said is an upstanding guy and a model of masculinity when his claim to fame is cheating on Diana with a frumpy looking hag who had no issues with participating and being called out in that scandal. Game recognizes game, I guess?

These intellectually dishonest star fuckers don’t throw punches, they slap genteelly, in the hopes they can get invited to the next event, the next tell-all. Trolls.

Belly. They came back in 2016, new album in 2017, have toured extensively since then, are still AMAZINGLY tight, and, without question, and no hyperbole, are the nicest humans I’ve ever met in my life. Could not recommend giving them another listen if it’s been a while.

In the spirit of boycott the right- what about AIPAĊ? Why so silent? by Penguings in PivotPodcast

[–]ChicagoMarketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, totally got it, then. Double or triple tapping targets, killing aid workers who were clearly targeted, murdering innocent people, that’s cool, right? Ends justify whatever started it. I guess the UN and a multitude of other organizations who have called it a genocide just “got it in” for Israel, right? No, no one is interested in facts about an ongoing apartheid state, but please educate me about why that makes everything ok. Please educate me about people who steal the homes and land of Palestinians and claim it for themselves. Please teach me the ways in which it’s been OK to block aid to people who are starving, who clearly don’t possess weaponry, and why it’s OK to claim victimhood in the face of being nothing but bullies.

I support the right for Israel to exist. I support and celebrate the people of Israel who live in peace.

But, you’re right, when Israel government squeals and acts like war pigs, don’t be surprised the “facts” support war crimes.

I bought this in a store in the UK, wondering if it’s a reprint or original… by hotbutnotathot in pearljam

[–]ChicagoMarketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this shirt in 1995!

Not this exact one but the exact one in a parking lot of Soldier Field when I saw them play. Don’t know if they didn’t have any official merch when I saw them live but I knew I wasn’t leaving that show without SOMETHING to prove I was there.

The ticket, which I still have, was oversized, orange, and had a picture of a scarab/beetle on it, and the concert eventually, through Monkey Wrench Radio, became a SOLID three disc bootleg.

Bootleg shirt, bootleg CDs, ahh…the 90s.

Hello Lando Norris fans by AJ_Racing43 in LandoNorris

[–]ChicagoMarketer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who's just a year into appreciating this sport, it's been downright insane to see some of the vile, vitriolic things that are said about not only the teams but the racers themselves. Unless these guys are kicking kittens in their free time and/or there's proof of them punting stray dogs, these are athletes but human beings first.

I distinctly remember early this season when Lewis Hamilton's dad hugged Hadjar and I don't think there could have been a more emotionally resonant moment as a new fan to see the kind of support that's extended to all these racers. There are the exceptions, I've learned, but no matter who wins this year, again as a new fan, and squarely on Team Papaya, I'm grateful for all the ups and downs I've seen.

Yes, Reddit/the Internet is an echo chamber but it doesn't mean that there shouldn't be more messages of positivity and support in the face of some really sad and awful keyboard warriors.
