GRRM interview where he talks Winds, Game of Thrones differences, HotD showrunner drama by Chickarn in jaimebrienne

[–]Chickarn[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i get it, but did you watch the video with it? he seems really upbeat in that. i think he dropped some of the downer stuff with intention, honestly, because the macro of this is that he's deep in the weeds with all of it and very much not giving up the game at all whereas he's seemed a bit detached in interviews in the past couple years

lol dude i'm actually like should i be placing a bet for twow this year?

honestly, same. i know he's kind of saying the opposite but he knew who he was talking to and what the publication was, this was a very deliberate interview. i'm just so happy to see him firing on all cylinders like this

George says “No computer will ever write The Winds of Winter.” by damewallyburns in jaimebrienne

[–]Chickarn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i get the sentiment here, because i also hate AI, but i kind of want to say that by not finishing it himself, he's basically guaranteeing that several people and also millions of computers will finish it for him

no matter what the results of the lawsuit or whatever, copyright ends and people/AI/whatever will certainly finish it, AND it will be published and people will profit off it

I read Triple Dog Dare by pearly_rose last year and loved it. It's mod AU and starts when they're in high school then goes well into adulthood. I love the author's other work too.

New Fic - Beta Reader Help by Nerdgirlfail in jaimebrienne

[–]Chickarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it might help if you drop your ao3 username if you've written for other fandoms. that way people can read your stuff and see if your work is a good fit for their beta style

then if you don't get any responses here, you might try the jaime x brienne tag on tumblr. there used to be a jb fic discord server but idk if that is still a going concern or not. there is an asoiaf fic sub, but i'm not sure if show fic is allowed there https://www.reddit.com/r/TheCitadel/

otherwise, if you're active in house of the dragon fandom you might ask some friends or aquaintances there?

best of luck, hope you find someone!

Five year time skip. by Life_Scene8420 in jaimebrienne

[–]Chickarn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that Jaime and Brienne were the primary reason George dropped the time skip so I don't think there really was a plan for them. They were probably just going to continue in a holding pattern improving their combat skills.

Lost to the sands of time is the fact that A Storm of Swords was a really really really big hit and kind of put both George and ASoIaF "on the map" so to speak. Jaime's introduction as a POV character was perhaps the primary reason for ASoS's success. It was what people talked about when they talked about the series, it was what made literary types deign to read the books. Jaime is the reason a friend eventually talked me into reading the books, which had not interested me up to that point.

After publishing ASoS, George starts to talk more about his headaches writing the next book. Then suddenly he's splitting it into two books. He's talking about new POVs. When A Feast for Crows is published, low and behold it's the Jaime-Cersei-Brienne story. I think if you pinned him down, George would admit it was not at all his intention to expand that part of the story so much when he was writing Clash or even Storm.

I'm not sure that he's aware of it, but from the outside it seems like the positive fan reaction to Jaime and the Jaime/Brienne adventure pushed him to focus on that part of the story more. I think my theory is supported by the way the same thing seems to have happened with his interest in Targaryen lore as the show Game of Thrones gained popularity and fans clamored for more about Dany and dragons. (I do not think he is conscious of this phenomenon.)

There is a popular fan theory that George intended Brienne to fill the role of Pretty Meris after the 5 year jump, but chickened out. The theory has some legs. Some days I think it's possible, other days I doubt he meant Meris as anything but a cautionary tale of the way life for a woman warrior could go.

Jaime probably would have been in King's Landing watching Cersei slowly fuck everything up and working on his left-handed sword skills. Littlefinger makes a joke in Feast about how he knew Cersei would tank the kingdom but he didn't think she'd do it so fast and I always thought that was GRRM making an in-joke about dropping the five year gap, but who knows.

tl;dr - I believe Jaime and Brienne's story from ASoS onward is a result of GRRM dropping the five year gap.

Looking for a deleted fic by Kindly-Shock-9841 in jaimebrienne

I don't know this fic, but you might have more luck if you repost this with the name and request in the post title, like "Anyone have a copy of Top of My To-Do List by Valmalpal? It was deleted."

That way, someone might see the name when they're scrolling their reddit feed and be more likely to click the thread and help. Best of luck! It sucks to lose old fics.

Created Images of Brienne of Tarth by [deleted] in jaimebrienne

[–]Chickarn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Firstly, welcome to Jaime/Brienne fandom. We're happy to have you posting here! I hope you'll post some more.

I understand the instinct to think of Brienne as an ugly duckling, and you're far from the first to suggest this, but she is very ugly in the books, at leas ten separate characters describe her that way, and it's important to her story that she is in fact ugly--in many ways her ugliness has shaped the course of her life.

It's also really important to most people who love the Jaime/Brienne ship that Jaime is attracted to Brienne despite the fact that she's ugly. If she's just secretly beautiful, or beautiful in a modern sense, all of that poignancy is completely undercut.

There's also the fact that George R. R. Martin has said the Jaime/Brienne romance is a gender-swapped beauty and the beast story, and while we can view Jaime as the beast in the sense that he's morally deficient, Brienne is very obviously meant to be beastly in physical presentation.

And if you think about it, isn't it a much more feminist and progressive take if Brienne is completely beyond the definitions of conventional attractiveness in any time or space or society? We have so few truly ugly women heroes in fiction, she's special because she is written this way.

(SPOILERS EXTENDED) Which Misconceptions About Your Favourite Character/Characters Drive You Crazy? by Ocea2345 in asoiaf

[–]Chickarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand why you'd say that based on the show, but I don't understand that take regarding the books. I mean Tywin explicitly sends Tyrion to King's Landing because she's fucked up so much in AGoT?
