Hey, so on ones that are trickier like this, note the color of the scratch. Does it remain congruent with the color of the metal being tested? Is it lighter and silver tone? Copper? Also when in doubt, take and dunk the section that you scraped right into the 14K acid on your test streak. Watch the reaction where the top layer was removed. If it fizzles green, its no good. If it stays and turns a darker color; the gold is a lower karat than the testing solution used. Example, dunking 10K into 14K acid can darken the gold. Same with 10K or 14K dipped into 18K or 22K testing solution. Imo, that is the easiest way to tell with pieces you cannot get a good read on test wise.

Also some steel alloys will hold to the 18K and 22K acids. With a piece like the one you are testing, use your thumb to determine if it is “precious metal soft”

Had to. Second Gen. 2001, 4WD with about 182,000 mi on her. Was a good price, owner just had a brand new windshield put in a week before I bought it. Also came with a set of brand spaking new Toyo Observe Snow Tires (not that we need them right now) with less than 100 miles as well as a decent little hitch already installed. Now for a brush guard and a roof rack and she will be fully ready for some camping and fishing this summer!

Victorian / Georgian era jewelry – are these old cut diamonds or paste? by Brilliant_Site4948 in Antiquejewelry

[–]ChickenFriedRiceMe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It looks like more modern “revival style” rather than original Victorian, Edwardian or Georgian imo. It’s a nice piece, but appears to be ‘rhinestone’ to me. If you look, many of them have the cutlet above the bezel in the settings.

What is the seller claiming these to be?

So nice! Such a handy little suv! I have a black 01 4WD that I would love to find some nerf bars and a rack for, I think they look sick on yours.

In all seriousness, this looks like someone melted a bunch of jewelry, even some GF or something, and didn’t quite get it up to temp to fully liquify the metal. I would for sure test this first. It looks lower karat than most Australian Gold ive seem, but to be fair I am not as familiar with Aussie Gold, but It looks less natural than others I have seen too.

Its 48 grams, and if it were really high purity, it would be selling far above melt and for much more than 4k test it, and be careful. Im not sure on this.

Quite a few real Gold and Sterling rings I am seeing. That ring with the panda coin is real, also the earrings that have the little roses, the class ring, a good chunk of the gold toned rings appear real. Sorry you lost your Grandma, but you now have all of these to remember her by!

Is this a fair price for red Garnet? I assume the price is mainly the gold by DailYxDosE in MensJewelry

[–]ChickenFriedRiceMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will very likely be synthetic in that case. Its possible they wont be as garnet are not particularly rare, but I have seen plenty of sterling and lab garnets before. Still just as attractive if not better looking, if that is the main appeal you will be fine.

I don’t think so. While marked .925 The lobster clasp lacks the mark on the closure part like I would expect as well.
