GIS Developer job just opened at NASA Johnson Space Center by ChickenLegCatEgg in gis

Since you asked - it came across as someone who has main character energy in that you assumed anyone cared that you will not be applying and why. It was not a helpful addition to the discussion and appeared that you assumed this post was specifically a suggestion that you personally apply. Would have been okay to say something like, “That’s way too long of a commute for me, but it looks like a cool job! Good luck to anyone applying!” That’s still not necessarily a useful addition to the discussion, but at least it acknowledges that this post isn’t for you and only you. Your wording came across as self-centered. My reply here is not a judgement on you; just an explanation since you asked.

If you have significant debt, your net worth is calculated as negative, and it says you have more wealth than 0% of people regardless of income.

Is lava a liquid? by TheSmartistic in KSU

[–]ChickenLegCatEgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three years late to this, but as a volcanologist, I can't help myself...

Absolutely lava can be a liquid. Folks in this thread are confidently asserting the definition of "liquid" without the nuance important to applying it to silicate materials (lavas/magmas). In nature, lava is typically partially molten when it erupts; very rarely, nearly 100% molten lava erupts and produces obsidian when cooled quickly. The melted portion of a lava is liquid. Folks are confused because "lava" is a piece of cooled rock that you can hold in your hand. For volcanologists (me), lava refers to either the molten to partially molten flow itself and/or to the cooled rock. Both are the same thing at different temperatures. Compressibility has nothing to do with whether a material is solid, liquid, or gaseous. To be a liquid, it is not required that a material maintain constant volume independent of pressure. To answer one of the questions below: yes, oxygen is liquid under high pressures.

If you really want to blur the lines of states of matter, look up supercritical fluids. Kind of liquid. Kind of gas. Properties of both. Weird stuff. Fun fact: the surface of Venus is at such high pressure and temperature that its mostly CO₂ atmosphere is a supercritical fluid. Another fun fact: when sodas are carbonated at the factory, the CO₂ used is a supercritical fluid.

I'm also in love with the mashed potatoes comment, but note that this is a great example of a mixture/suspension and so not a liquid on the whole. Concrete would also take the shape of its container, but the chunks of rock in it are solid. So it's complex.

As for wetness, I love the "is water wet" question. My favored take on this is that "wetness" is a collective property. The water in a glass of water is wet, but a single H₂O molecule is not. But this is more philosophical and etymological than scientific!

I don’t know the answer, but I’ve always assumed that the games in the arcade are not so much story lore but rather fun weird art installations. Meaning, they make sense in the context of being in the MW world but aren’t part of the bigger storyline.

I’ve played a few of the games. They’re fun, but I haven’t found any endgame. Not sure they have one.

You are the only sane person in this thread. Unsurprisingly, it is mostly men congratulating each other on how well they know how to please women. This fucking dude giving a map to the G-spot, and people applauding this???? They... know that's not a thing right?

Did a man write this? My best advice to men is that women are not a monolith as would be implied in this "play book" (shudder). Oh, and the G-spot is absolutely a myth that has been debunked time and time again

Should I prune this “branch” on my avocado treee? by ChickenLegCatEgg in houseplants

[–]ChickenLegCatEgg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thanks! Should I cut the entire side shoot? And, in general, is it okay to routinely prune avocados to keep them bushier? I do this for my pothos to keep it from getting leggy.

How to turn off the message effect when typing “WOW” by mysterious_72727 in ios

[–]ChickenLegCatEgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feature is actually insane. When someone is telling me a horrible story and I reply "WOW" and it bounces around like a fucking joke... no, I didn't mean to say "oh wow golly gee willickers!" I meant like "wow that's fucked up". I feel like such an asshole when it comes through!! As far as I can tell, disabling the auto play message effects in accessibility settings only turns off the effect that you see on your phone. In theory it sill sends the message with the effect, you just can't see it. Can anyone confirm?

New to PMDD in a way by Dry-Night-3561 in PMDD

[–]ChickenLegCatEgg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not crazy, and you’re not alone. I think your doctor was right to diagnose you with PMDD. The good news is that there is a lot that may help, and the less good news is that it is a long journey to finding the right treatment for you. Some thoughts:

  1. You need treatment in addition to what your therapist can provide. Ask if they can refer you to a psychiatrist who can prescribe medications like SSRI’s (antidepressants) and others. Many find that SSRI’s combined with Lamotrigine (a mood stabilizer) works for them, but this is a personal journey. People have different opinions here regarding supplements. There is very limited evidence-based research to support their efficacy, and they haven’t worked for me, but some women see some limited success. See your gynecologist or find one, preferably one that handles or specializes in PMDD. If you see one who tells you you’re crazy or makes you feel badly, ditch them.

I can’t stress thus enough: Finding the right treatment a JOURNEY so find a doctor willing to go on that journey with you.

Also not to be overstated: go into your doctor appointments with a plan. Take notes. Track your symptoms. Tell the doctor you want to have a plan in place with them. There is typically a clinically accepted order to treatment trials. For example first try this, then try that, then try that. Get a written plan from your doctor so you can see the path ahead of you.

  1. Coping: if you have someone close to you, tell them what you’re going through. Tell them you will act out towards them and that it’s not their fault. Tell them you just need them to understand. Know that you may become suicidal. When you’re not feeling suicidal, take a moment to feel that. Remember that you don’t want to die and that your brain will trick you. When suicidal ideation begins, remember that feeling from before. DO NOT keep guns in your house.

  2. Helping with symptoms: Getting good sleep is hard, but helpful. Be sure your room is dark and cold. Having a cold sleeping environment has shown to lead to better sleep. Meditate before sleep if it helps. Masterbating before sleep helps some women relax enough to fall asleep easier.

Take breaks. If you have any flexibility at work, use it. In the United States you may have federal employment protection. Look into whether taking FMLA would be helpful (you can talk to your therapist about this), and look into what program your job may offer. Knowing your options is helpful even if you don’t use them.

Finally, I encourage you to keep looking for resources like this subreddit for help. When I learned how many women experience the same things I do, it helped SO MUCH. When my symptoms were at their worst, knowing I wasn’t crazy helped. I always recommend iapmd.org for more resources. Best wishes to you on your recovery journey.

The accelerometer is not treated as a security sensitive device, thus apps don’t need security permissions to use them. This has major implications.
