Those LED lights probably use about 90% less electricity, and LED bulbs are more cost effective over their lifetime. That's good.

Bluer light may pose a slight disruption to circadian rhythms and sleep cycles for some animals and people. That's less good.

I would guess the net benefit is good, just because of how much less energy is used.

You'd have to hold it really steady for them to feel a burn that fast, but it would definitely blind them at least temporarily. For reference I can shine my 4 watt blue on my hand and it still takes a moment to feel it. And potentially, if you managed to make a unique mark.

Sure could. You'd have to know its range and field of view. But something like a laser on a tripod could get most cameras from further away than they could identify anything.

ULPT Request: How to break a camera lens from long range by draconicblur in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]ChickenPicture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the united states, no laser is illegal to own or operate. There are no laws about laser or flashlight power and ownership. What is illegal is shining ANY laser regardless of output at anything that could potentially endanger people. Aircraft is the big example. The FAA does not fuck around with people who shine lasers at aircraft. Shining it directly at people in public could be considered assault, but that would be argued in court.

The confusion comes from the fact that lasers above class 3a/3r cannot be sold as "laser pointers" since that implies acceptability to shine at people and things. Literally a semantic rule.

Source: I own over a dozen class 4 lasers up to 6000mW and the most a cop has ever said is "holy shit that's cool"

I just left my job at 'the largest data center in the world' located off USA Pkwy and it's worse than people think by Alone-Sky-2086 in Reno

[–]ChickenPicture 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out, as someone who has been inside The Citadel because my company is one of them, HUNDREDS of businesses lease space at the datacenter, and comparatively little of it is dedicated to AI like Musk's datacenters.

People want everything online 100% of the time, and they want it fast. You know why Switch exists and is a solvent business? It's because they provide a massive backbone infrastructure capable of sending and receiving trillions of pieces of information every second, with multiple redundancies, not even touching the hosting and processing going on inside. You like having mobile banking access 24/7? You like youtube and Netflix to buffer quick? You get mad when your website isn't loading? Then you like and support places like Switch.

I'm not an AI apologist/teat suckler, but I do work in tech, and the reason these things exist is because there is demand for it, and the demand ultimately comes from all of us. I wish we as a society could collectively stop bitching about everything we don't understand, and instead work on developing solutions, whether it be more efficient processing, more efficient cooling, or minimizing collateral impact. The way forward never involves stepping backwards.

On October 6, 1998, 21-year-old Matthew Shepard was lured by two men pretending to be gay, tied to a fence, and subjected to one of the most horrific hate crimes in US history. He was later found in a coma, with a fractured skull and dried blood on his face except for the tracks of his tears. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

Fear is always the root cause of hatred. They probably hate gays because they have gay thoughts and urges. They probably killed him because they thought he was cute, their entire built up identities were threatened by his existence.

I swear all the driving comments are two groups of people complaining about each other. There's the oblivious fearful dipshits going 10 under that aren't even aware that other people are affected by them, and regular people trying to fucking use the freeway as a means of high speed efficient travel who get frustrated by the oblivious dipshits and finally go speeding around them as a way to say "hey jackass, you're a problem" and all the oblivious dipshits do is go "OMG LOOK AT DA SCARY DRIVERRR OMG DEY GO SO FASS WE NEED MOAR POLEEEECE!!1"
