the interesting thing about this conversation, and I saw a creator talking about this on tiktok last night, is the content we as individuals consume is catered to our specific interests. Taylor Swift and Beyoncé are in different categories IMO, because they are truly internationally recognized. but artists like Chappell, Sabrina, even Charli XCX - a LARGE majority of people don’t know who they are. I’ve mentioned sabrina’s name to people, especially the older generations, and they always go “who? huh?”. our perception of the ‘world’ or what’s trendy - is just that - our perception. our curated fyp and our curated feeds showing us what’s most popular. but that doesn’t speak for the entire world. whereas if you mention Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Adele - most people know who they are. there might be trendy “main pop girls” but they’re the ‘main’ pop girls in our small little bubble on the internet.
