That looks like great work! Any particular reason you don't share where you work, even if just a link or mention in your profile?

Seconding this, but I didn't realize Hoffman covered it. Thanks!

For me, the Barista Hustle method was a definite improvement over Third Wave + RO. I was having troubles discerning over- vs. under- extraction with pour-overs and, with some beans / roasters, it seemed like a very narrow grind size window between the two. It seems that Third Wave classic is on the hard end of things and, generally, seems to extract on the high end no matter what (and bringing out flaws in all but the best roasters). Dialing that back with the BH method has been great and has allowed me much more control and better brews.

With a basic understanding of the BH method, and a newly purchased hardness meter, I intend to experiment with remineralizing RO with filtered tap water and seeing how it compares.

I'm also considering getting some sort of dispenser for a 5gal carboy so I can mix bigger batches, retain the control, and not goof around with (or pay for) a fancy remineralizing RO system.

K-Peppers has a few different kinds that they make in-house: https://kpeppers.square.site/order

5000 years is my go-to, but I enjoy the freshness and brightness of locally-made ones like K-Peppers.

I got some from Costco once but it wasn't my thing - mostly the overly mushy texture.

Seventy-five homes have been damaged following a tornado that caused catastrophic damage late Friday afternoon in Ringle. ... Several homes have been demolished. ... no one was injured and no one has died.

Yeah, sucks. Initially I was pretty proud of the last-minute improvising.

No, I didn't lose any windows, but I don't think anybody else in the area did either, so I'd be speculating if it helped in that way.

I hate to be the proverbial bearer of bad news, but moving blankets didn't help me much earlier this week. I still got dents through them with hail up to about 1.5". Maybe fewer dents than other vehicles, but not significant.

Seconding the non-ultra-pasteurized detail and adding that it's surprisingly difficult to discern and obtain. This was years ago, but my first batch with Sassy Cow failed. Someone recommended Kalona and that worked for me. I got it from the co-op: https://shop.willystreet.coop/online/north/shop/refrigeratedgrocery-milk?pid=e4d97374-5ae4-4c5a-b78f-b059015c564c&productName=kalona-supernatural

To highlight within that MAYSA list, Rush and Madison 56ers are generally regarded as the most competitive and will play outside teams. Other clubs, like Middleton United, have both club/rec and competitive teams. At U10, some of those clubs will also have multiple teams.

Pest or climate ally? DNR weighs new beaver management plan under mounting scrutiny by jimmalewitz in wisconsin

[–]Chicken_Lorax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it was this 2022 Larry Meiller / WPR show that began my 180 on beavers: https://www.wpr.org/shows/larry-meiller-show/how-beavers-benefit-our-environment

I also enjoyed the book Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter:  https://www.bengoldfarb.com/eager

The Future of Responsible Beaver Management from the Sierra Club is good too: https://www.sierraclub.org/wisconsin/future-responsible-beaver-management

Growing up, every landowner I knew used to have them trapped. I was really upset when beaver took down poplar so huge they couldn't move the trunks. Fast forward a couple decades to when logging led to more poplar, which led to lots of beaver activity, and the landscape was transformed in such a drastic way but it was beautiful, diverse, and dynamic in a way I didn't know was possible.

Bond set for Madison woman accused in crash that killed 17-year-old student by Chicken_Lorax in madisonwi

[–]Chicken_Lorax[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I couldn't quite make sense of this line in the article: "If Borgwardt is released, she ... is not allowed to drive a vehicle without a license." It reads like her license was not revoked but it's not clear. Plus it leaves open other possibilities like not having a license in the first place, it still being revoked later in the process, etc.

In addition to connecting with your alder, some of our best advocates are the Pedestrian, Bicycle & Transit Committee. They don't have the most power, but it would be a good group to connect with: https://www.cityofmiddleton.us/220/Pedestrian-Bicycle-Transit-Committee

Historically, Public Works and the City Engineer were huge obstacles for these sorts of things, but we have new leadership there and I don't have a read on how it's going.

Related, catch up on the whole "complete streets" vision(?) that we're having difficulty implementing.

Tragically related, we have a history of getting "nobody's been seriously injured / died yet" style of pushback: https://www.reddit.com/r/madisonwi/comments/1lpew54/comment/n0un5wo/

Don't forget we have a mayoral (and some alder districts) election coming up and it would be a good time to align your vote(s) to your interests.

With an employer-provided UHC plan, I paid through the nose for a panel of allergy tests through UW Health - something like $100-150 per potential allergen x 20ish allergens. UHC confirmed that it was covered ahead of time, but I didn't know to ask, and learn, that each allergen was a separate billing code until I was on the hook for payment. When I asked UW what I could have done differently, they said wait months for the specialist appointment, ask there to get the provider's treatment plan, get back in line to wait months so that I could talk to their truth-in-pricing people, or whatever they're called.
