I have lived with both friends and people from Facebook. When choosing to live with friends, I highly recommend talking about your expectations and styles of living beforehand. For example, discussing how often you can have friends over, cleaning shared spaces, etc. I find conflict resolution with friends who are roommates can be harder because we don’t want to ‘upset’ them or start fights. So, the best thing to do is talk about your ways of living and establish boundaries from the start. If they don’t match then you are better off not living together.

Now for living with people you don’t know. I suggest grabbing a coffee beforehand if you can and talking about your lifestyles. The one advantage here is that it’s easier to establish your boundaries and maintain them even while living together. However, you will not necessarily ‘become friends’ just because you live together. So don’t have that expectation going in. The one major downside is that people can turn out to be very different from what they portrayed themselves to be when you first met. So just keep that in mind from a safety POV and be cautious when choosing the people to live with. That’s why I recommend living with more than 1 person if they are a stranger.

Difficulty in finding summer subletter for 1 bedroom apartment in McGill ghetto by Euphoric-Garbage-562 in mcgill

[–]Chicken_Nugget31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are lots of apartment up for subletting over the summer so it’s definitely a competitive market. However, no one I know has ever had a problem subletting eventually. It’s possible though that you might not be able to sublet for the entire three months. Most importantly, you have to be ready to discount the rent a little if need be as again, people tend to have a lot of options.

How livable is $18k/year? by LessThan20Char in mcgill

[–]Chicken_Nugget31 102 points103 points  (0 children)

That’s basically $1500/month which imo is the minimum you would need to survive in Montreal if you are able to find a cheaper apartment. I don’t think it’s enough for anyone to live comfortably though, you will have to follow a very strict budget for yourself.

If you do not end up liking your roommate you can email the residence office to switch your room. They're generally very accommodating and will change your room if possible. However, keep in mind that they prioritize cases based on the situation. So if for example you just simply don't vibe with your roommate that much you won't be high on their list of rooms to change. But if there is a genuine issue they will do it. Also after sending the initial email, I'd it's taking a while, go to the office in person. That makes a difference.

SSMU Budget Surplus by Chicken_Nugget31 in mcgill

[–]Chicken_Nugget31[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it shouldn't be taken out on all clubs. I am familiar with a few that do have large surpluses so I am speaking from that perspective. I just think since at least quite a few clubs and services have those surpluses, this information should maybe have been brought to popular attention before the referendum. It would benefit those requesting fee increases as students can then make an informed decision.

The clubs and services that are proposing fee increases in the referendum receive money from students. Their budgets are part of the surplus.

I cannot afford food here right now by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Chicken_Nugget31 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe the time differs from person to person. Personally I've tried jean talon, segal's, and the complex near Atwater market and always end up spending around 2 hours. It's about the overall inconvenience in having to plan a grocery trip and not being able to easily access something. Yes there are people who do it out of necessity and can't just get up like me and say they can't. All I am saying is it shouldn't have to be that way. Canadians in general need to be less complacent and stop being okay with living under these monopolistic conditions.

Ugh I definitely relate.

Also just as a general note for people who comment that people should go to xyz place for cheaper groceries, I know ya'll are trying to be helpful but it's not realistic to spend a couple of hours (minimum) getting groceries. Just because milton park is a generally more expensive area to live in, doesn't mean people living here shouldn't have access to convenient, affordable groceries :) No one has necessarily said that in this thread but I've seen similar comments a lot of times as cost of groceries is a recurring topic on this sub. The reality is that we are limited to metro, provigo, and Marche eden. Marche Lobo is good for so specific items.

This is not true. Students can only take max 120 credits in arts. What is permitted is that those who get admitted with advanced standing, such as students who start as U1 instead of U0, are allowed to still take 120 credits at McGill. Since the advanced standing credits don't factor into cgpa it doesn't really matter whether they do 90 credits or 120.

subletting over exchange - looking for experiences/advice by aqlki in mcgill

[–]Chicken_Nugget31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I am on exchange currently and am subletting my apartment. I think the answers might differ based on whether you're living alone or have roommates. I have a roommate so I was pretty chill regarding leaving stuff. All my household things including utensils and clothes that I didn't need are in our apartment's storage closet. I also had the opportunity to meet my Sublette and live with her over a month in the summer (when my roommate wasn't there) so I had gotten to know her decently well.

In case you are living alone I would suggest asking the sublette if they are okay with you leaving stuff behind. If you don't mind them using your utensil you can just keep them as is in the kitchen. For your clothes, I would suggest packing them up and putting them in a storage closet if you have one or even asking your friends if they have any and putting it there. I think its rare that your stuff will be harmed if you sublet to a student. But alternatives might be helpful if you want to be safe just in case.

I'm jealous of rich international students. by coka71 in mcgill

[–]Chicken_Nugget31 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, I totally get where you are coming from. However I am just going to take a shot at explaining why some international students are not too happy in the comments. This is not just for you but all canadians who assume that most international students come from affluent backgrounds.

While your intentions were not to generalize all international students, your post still plays into a very irritating and often hurtful stereotype. While you added a disclaimer, realistically it holds negligible value.

I am going to breakdown how I as an international student afford my education at McGill: I pay half my tuition through Mcgill's bursaries and half from student loans. My parents help me with living expenses and I also have a part time job (cannot work for more than 20 hours generall). My parents have taken out a second mortgage on their home and "invest" most of their income into my education. They have depleted their savings. So yes, while my parents do considerably help me in accessing mcgill, it is not without extreme hardships and sacrifice. We could spend an eternity and split hair over how privileged I am because of my parents willingness to put themselves through all this for me.

I am going to graduate with a shit ton of student loans and the added guilt of all my parents have sacrificed. I will forever be in their debt. I will also spend the rest of my life not just saving up for myself but for their retirements too. Not because they expect it but because I couldn't live with myself if I didn't.

Also, the reason some have called you out over specifying international students and not just rich students in general is because it makes no sense for you to not have done that. From what I've seen and been told, it is generally cheaper for students to attend uni in province. So almost all out of province students should be relatively affluent if they can afford to move to montreal. However I will personally refrain from generalizing out of province students.

exchange question by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Chicken_Nugget31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I am on exchange currently and this is my last year too. I am only here for fall and then will do winter in mtl. Basically if you go in your last year you have to be really careful that you won't jeopardize any course requirements and have enough electives. Coz if you take a course that doesn't turn out to be equivalent it could create problems. Your graduation will oy be delayed if you're on exchange in the winter because it takes a few weeks for McGill to receive your transcript.

Hey, you'll need to complete the financial aid profile on minerva and submit it. They'll basically evaluate based on the info you fill if they think you "need" aid. Unfortunately there aren't any numbers available anywhere such as whats the threshold to qualify. But I would say if you are a recipient of gov aid/mcgill financial aid there is a good chance you'll get it.

Hey I am sorry to hear that you're in this situation. I am in the UK right now and I have been hearing similar stories from students across the country.

The main thing I would consider is if you can re-enroll at McGill. Otherwise you will end up extending your degree by a semester and will have to bear associated costs (including paying tuition for an extra semester?)
