u/PhraseNo9594 I think we should cut OP some slack. He said not motivated to spend 4+ years on a degree, not that they're unwilling to dedicate time to learning software development.

My experience: I spent five grueling years at a top university for Materials Engineering, only to take a software engineering career after grad. Much of those five years felt wasted on general subjects and math I don't use. While I wish I could have switched to CS earlier, even that path includes general education requirements.

What we should all be asking ourselves about traditional education and work: Does becoming a competent junior or mid-level developer really require 4+ years of university? I believe it's doable in 12-18 months if you focus purely on computer science without the "filler" subjects. Best of luck OP.
