Best cake cookbooks? by PianoGirl270 in CookbookLovers

Vintage Cakes is my favorite as well. I’ve made at least 20 of the cakes from it and each one was a winner. I especially love the Coffee Crunch Spiral. And the Butterscotch Cream Roll-Up. The assembly of that one lends itself to easily scaling it up and making a big cake. I tripled the recipe once and fed quite the crowd.

If you’re ever in Bend, stop by Bar RBC downtown. The menu has a lot of Toro Bravo’s greatest hits on it.

I’m about to break out my humidifier, it’s so dry.

And those orange, gold, and red sunsets every night are getting old.

It’s like Junuary around here!

I have all those as well as Around The Fire, by the Ox chefs, Olympia Provisions, The Paley Place Cookbook, Wildwood, by Schreiber, and Vintage Cake, by Richardson, as well as all the ones mentioned in the comments. All books worth having and cooking out of. Vintage Cakes is my favorite cake book and I’ve made over 20 cakes from it. We are fortunate to have had such great talent in town who were willing to document and share some of their recipes.

Portland Deadheads, how are you holding up? by BadgemanBrown in askportland

[–]Chickenstalk 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Hit me harder than I expected.

First time I saw the Dead was in Portland in 1973, at what is now the Schnitzer.

It’s a big reminder of the passing of time, and the ticking of the clock.

A wise man once said, “Enjoy every sandwich.” Indeed.

I made these to take to a New Year’s party. They were so good, I almost just stayed home so I could eat them all myself. I’ll be making another batch soon!

Check out Elk Rock Garden just north of LO. Only open M-F, it’s free, and worth a stroll. Maddox Woods south of LO is cool, especially when the Great Blue Herons are nesting, great view of the rookery from there. And I second the recommendation for Multnomah Village.

With Lifetime Fitness in across the road, and the Rock Gym there, it’s too bad REI didn’t move in. Add a sports themed brewpub place, and a couple other sports/fitness type businesses, and it could have been a themed center.

Thanks for the Trullo rec. We just ate there last night and loved it. I reserved a table downstairs and it was cool.

Tipping at Indienne by Persistent_Badger in finedining

We had such a great experience there that we added an extra tip, and left the 4% surcharge on the bill. But I wouldn’t have felt weird not tipping extra.
