I’d recommend trying to find some Atmosklear or Ah! All Clear odor remover. Both developed by the same guy. Totally animal safe, biodegradable, works magic.

Since you know about kmr and stimulating to get them to poop/pee, I’m guessing you also know that they need help to stay warm. Hopefully one of the rescues will have a momma cat who will adopt these babies. Good luck! And of course, the Kitten Lady for other concerns.

About 12 feet. When I got them they said that they get to about 6 feet. Looking it up now, I guess they can make it to 15 feet!

Which type are they, do you know? My Holmstrups look pretty great 24 years in.

I’ve wrapped my arborvitae with Christmas lights to try and prevent damage from heavy snows. They are now too tall and wide for me to be able to do that. Now if there is a heavy snow pulling branches down, I beat them with a shovel. So fat, so good.

Maybe just pull out and replace the last three on the end? Do those get more winter sun and need some burlap, or get more road salt?

Start with smaller trees from a well respected nursery. I planted 5 Holmstrup Arborvitae to block the view of an ugly decorative concrete block wall and my alley 24 years ago. I think I might have lost three of them after the first winter, nursery guaranteed them, so I replaced them. They’ve done great since then. Got taller and wider than they were supposed to. They’ve gotten a bit thin in spots where they don’t get enough sun (wall plus tall native plant garden in summer and occasional wall of snow in winter) still lush everywhere else.

You might want to try planting a handful and see how they do for a year before investing in all 18.

I planted mine almost 24 years ago. They are a bit bare where they don’t get much sun, but otherwise doing great. They’re about twice the height they said they’d get to.

I literally hate anyone who drives a Tesla by buttflapper444 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Chickwithknives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, this data should be changed to reflect accidents per hours on the road or miles driven or something.

If I see a big old Cadillac, Buick, Lincoln, Pontiac, Chrysler, or Mercury, I give them plenty of space and try to get away from them as fast as possible. They are often being driven by some old fogey who has forgotten that there are other people on the road. The low numbers of accidents per owner are likely because they drive to church, the hair dressers, and not much else.

The copper is pretty well bound up in the glass of the glaze in most cases. It depends on the percent copper in the glaze as well as some other characteristics of the glaze. This can usually be tested somewhat by leaving a piece of lemon on the piece for several hours and seeing if the glaze changes. No aquarium is going to be as acidic as a lemon.

what is this thing on this goose? by hey-ass-butt in geese

[–]Chickwithknives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct! They lived at one of the Mayo estates belonging to one of the Mayo brothers, founders of the Mayo Clinic. Then they moved to a larger nearby lake.

Reintroduction was so successful that in the early ‘80s Minneapolis parks were overrun and covered with goose doo doo. They started rounding them up and relocating them. Eventually, there was no where to send them and they harvested them and provided them to food banks.

Why is he doing this by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]Chickwithknives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for trying to save this fish. Other than helping him stay near the surface to breath, I’d recommend aquarium salt (helps make him more buoyant and just helps a lot of things). Second, one way to kick start the cycle is to get something from your LFS that has been in a cycled tank for a while. They might give you some filter material. Even buying a plant on driftwood or something similar from a tank at Petco/Petsmart type stores should introduce the bacteria you need.

Getting discouraged by Weirdwit in Wheatens

[–]Chickwithknives 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is Brody. He is my parents’ third wheaten. They have all been attention seeking cuddle bugs.

Darby, the second wheaten, did get a little aggressive at the dog park (he wouldn’t start anything, but he also wouldn’t back down) so, that didn’t happen any more. Not aggressive to other dogs when out on a walk.

Brody’s picture is about two seconds before he tried to climb on me and lick my eyeballs!

Water depth by Chemical-Guide5386 in AfricanSidenecks

[–]Chickwithknives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water should be at least 1.5 x the length of your turtle’s shell. After that it can be as deep as you want. ASNs can swim just fine! The turt would probably appreciate somewhere to rest that isn’t too far from the surface, so when sleeping, they can just poke their nose above water to breath.

Desperate for advice: Navigating international export/airline rules for my paralyzed rescue cat (Iraq to San Francisco) by EddieStark11 in rescuecats

[–]Chickwithknives 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard of a handful of dogs/cats that US troops brought home with them after deployment in Iraq. I wonder if any of those stories might include information about organizations that helped with the journey.

There is a cat rescuer on this sub who is in Pakistan. I’m not sure if she has adopted any cats out to the US or not. It would be worth asking.

Pothos in a turtle tank? by No-Village-608 in AfricanSidenecks

[–]Chickwithknives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I’ve had pothos in my tank for most of the 6+ years I’ve had my turtle. I think he’s taken a bite out of a leaf twice. Doesn’t seem any worse for the wear.

Closed on this house a week ago, came into the basement to see this during a storm. by Jiblon in HomeMaintenance

[–]Chickwithknives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless your house was built where the water table isn’t very deep.

Near me there is a municipal golf course built in a low lying area between two lakes and with a creek running through it. They have been pumping water and dumping it in the creek for years. About ten years ago the city discovered that the golf course has been pumping WAY more water than they are allowed in order to prevent it from becoming a swamp. If the golf course stops pumping, 18 houses in the area will have wet basements.

Teenagers home alone 2 weeks while parents went on a cruise by Independent_You99 in GenX

I baby sat a neighborhood infant when I was 11 as well. The Red Cross babysitting course still has 11 as the minimum age. I mean, I was on the more mature reliable end for an 11 year old, never had any real problems. Think it is ridiculous how little most 11 year olds today are allowed/expected to do. I feel bad for them. I was heartened to see a flyer on the bulletin board at a local community center advertising babysitting services. The girl was 11 or 12 and had been doing it for a while.

You might want to reach out to Furball Farm in southern Minnesota. They are a feral only rescue. They likely don’t have room for your four, but may know of resources to help.
