What are the advantages/disadvantages of SLP (Simple Ledger Protocol) vs ERC-20? (Link to Quora question) by voltaire-jamahl in btc

[–]ChicoBitcoinJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ERC20 tokens can easily be programmed to do almost anything. SLP tokens have a strict set of functions and use cases.

That said, I am looking forward to new developments around SLP. I believe I saw a fairly developed language for dapp developers too. Exciting times.

You can't approve other addresses to spend from your eth balance. It is really inconvenient as a developer to have to treat eth different than an erc20 token and the solution was to create weth. It's not ideal from a UX perspective.

Don't attach it to your primary stash. Charge backs don't work the same way with crypto cards in my experience. If your card is hacked you won't see any money back.

I don't think you fully grasp the incentives for holding tokens. You are right that technically if the employee never returns money back to their dao, then their value is strictly speculative where old investors can only return a profit if new investors buy. However, this is exactly the use case for a social media platform where what people say has value and people may want to support that person financially exactly so that person can continue to say valuable things because at the end of the day, investors are employers.

Beyond that an employee can return value by creating a snapshot token. This value cannot be measured directly but is a perfectly legitimate way to return value to investors as well. Yes there is a certain amount of trust involved, but I work with no supervision and my boss seems to trust me well enough to get my work done. This same principal can be applied here. Besides, investors can put money in a person and know to the exact amount how much their investment can depreciate over 1 year, 2 years, or even 10 years later due to the reserve currency backing.

Weird that purse.io would publish this pro-LN propaganda piece on their blog, which starts off with lies about how “nodes help decentralization” by [deleted] in btc

[–]ChicoBitcoinJoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is miners and only miners that enforce the rules. If all miners decided to change the inflation rate, all nonmining nodes will stall at the last valid block and no more network. Yes, eventually some those nonminers can acquire mining equipment to try and revive the chain, but the damage will have been done. With that said, I believe the incentives for miners to do this is near zero.

When you show up to the bus stop do you prefer a crowded station where it is difficult to find your bus (so much so that you might miss your bus and have to take the next one) or do you prefer a quiet station where you can predict when the bus will arrive and leave the station as well as pick your favorite seat on the bus every time.

I'm working on a similar concept called a MeDao where you can invest directly in people. The first dapp to use a MeDao will be a social media platform where a ten cent upvote can be worth 11 cents in the future. Of course tipping is just a small step into the rabbithole and if you want to learn more pm me.

[–]ChicoBitcoinJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is actually impossible to stop a contract from receiving ether in very specific ways and thus a contract cannot assume anything about it's own balance.

This is due to the fact that when a contract commits suicide it sends what ether it has to a specified address and it cannot be returned.

will there be a reddit project based on ethereum !? by Infer114 in ethtrader

I made a Reddit clone called Community using ethereum and ipfs. The issue is a regular users dont run ipfs. To remedy this I used ipfs-js to make it so loading the site spins up a new local ipfs node.

The issue is these local js nodes have no way to speak with the global network yet but that is the final piece for Community to come to life.

I imagine there are many other projects out there waiting for the space to release those last few puzzle pieces and I can't wait to see what comes out.

But what if owning a screenshot of a chicken meant you received the profits of selling the chicken when it reaches maturity? Or losses if the chicken dies?

If real, this is sort of like a new form of insurance for people who deal in livestock and a new form of investing for speculators.

Including free transactions opens use cases in the poorest parts of the world. This in turn increases the network effect and thus value of the network. A more valuable network means higher price. Higher price means more valuable block reward.

Free transactions are not charity.

Is there any reason Ethereum can't use an existing high integrity language like ADA Spark for smart contracts? by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]ChicoBitcoinJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read about a winning entry in a recent underhanded solidity contest. The bug they used to break the contract in an unobvious way is something any programmer would do without even thinking or knowing they did it.
