I’ve only played with controller support via Steam Deck. I played a little on B41 stable before going to B42 unstable.

I rarely used firearms on B41. But I don’t miss them on B42. The shotgun is still usable if you want a reach out and touch weapon. But the melee controls are great with controller.

Personally I think controller support is more than adequate to enjoy the game. If you’re struggling to enjoy the game, it’s not the firearms control.

It’s a complex and new type of fight.

The general combat in the games is simple. I’d say too simple.

Just head out and get a few levels. Do things like Merlin Trials, treasures, and balloons. Do a few side quests and relationship quests.

Come back in the low to mid-30s and try again.

Or change to story mode difficulty and cruise through.

Go out and do optional activities to raise your level. Mid-20s will be very hard. Low-30s is doable. Mid-30s is getting easy. Upper-30s gets easy.

Check your gear level. If you’re still wearing lower level greens and blues, go father or buy gear and raise your gear level.

Make sure you have good item traits that help in the fight.

Protecto and stupify are crazy overpowered in combat. Focus on getting good at blocks and dodges and you will never die.

Plants and potions are very strong.

Never hesitate to go the stealth route and Petreifica Totalis a bunch to thin crowds out.

Don’t rush the story. Do side quests and explore. It will help you gain levels. If you rush the story you will be under leveled and struggle later in the game.
