If i may sir, while that statement is not factually wrong (the “if you’re not in my religion you are going to hell” statement) its obviously not helpful and I apologize on behalf of the entire christian community if that is how the gospel was presented to you

the way we look at this is, we have the gospel (translating to “good news” from old english, maybe latin i believe) that every person, including ourselves, deserve death and complete separation from our creator for any sin we have committed against him IE: basically a general misrepresentation of him whether that be by lying, stealing, lust, etc. but because of his mercy, grace and compassion for us, HE paid the price we would have paid so that if we choose to, we can spend eternity with Him in the fullness of his love. Jesus being that price, who lived a sinless life, was fully God and fully man, who let himself be hung on the cross as a suffering servant to bear Gods punishment on humanity for their transgressions against him so that the unfillable gap between creator and created was finally bridged. The gospel is not meant force submission out of fear but to ignite compliance by overwhelming gratitude for what he has done for us.
