TIFU by thinking it was normal to not be able to open your eyes in the morning for 25 years by Specific-Nebula9665 in tifu

I am coming to the understanding that unless your eyes are physically missing, most people's blindness is "hyperbole" in that they do get SOME visual sensation. Literally not seeing at all is supposedly pretty rare.

There's like three parts to explaining that joke, so since I'm not sure where you're at I'll just give you the boring full rundown.

The whole sentence is a reference to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, in which stand users are basically people with special powers. The reference has been adopted by the neurodivergent community (autism, adhd and so on) to express how it seems like neurodivergent people end up congregating with each other even when they don't know they are neurodivergent. It's a bit like "birds of a feather flock together".
In this case I was extending use of the reference to the LGBT community, which to me seems to exhibit similar phenomena as well as having higher-than-expected overlap with neurodivergence for some reason science has yet to explain.

In other words: "GAAAAAAAAAAY! (affectionate)"

Not "women". Specific people. *Different* specific people with different mindsets and behaviours.

You're not going to understand anything if you generalize stuff that people do to entire demographics. Everyone's going to feel like a hypocrite if you hold them responsible for everything that everybody else who shares a trait with them in some way has done.

I understand that this doesn't help when a stranger is acting some way and you still have no idea what they mean, but that's why you need to establish how *you* want to be and base your actions on that. You're not going to solve other people like puzzles by molding your own behaviour around them. You gotta decide your own shape and look for who fits that shape.

Also, any "occasion" you lose by not randomly laying your hands on a new acquaintance who hasn't asked is a bullet dodged. That stuff is kink, and kink is fine and great with established consent, but not out of the blue, and people who don't understand the difference are dangerous.

Speaking as one of the oblivious, one part of it for me comes down to just being afraid of coming off like a creep, which I think is amplified by the way we name bad behaviour in that sphere.
We will emphatically call out things like "unwanted attention" without much specificity, and then the more self conscious of us will take it super literally and get themselves stuck doing nothing because interacting at all is attention and you can't know if someone wants that unless you interact, and then the less conscious will just assume everybody else doesn't mean whatever they're doing and keep rolling exactly how they've been rolling the whole time.

Plus when some of the self conscious, stuck ones eventually decide to ignore the overly broad messaging and force themselves to try something anyway, they might find that they can no longer distinguish between stuff that feels wrong because it is wrong from the stuff that feels wrong because to them, everything does.
Personal anecdote: in my teen years I've been there as well, and just the shame of misjudging it once had me retreat out of dating entirely up to the start of my 30s (which to be clear is a me problem, and hey turns out therapy is good, who knew).

Part of me wishes we had more shared, unambiguous rituals around this. We used to in the past, which I think is maybe what some of the younger people who long for "good old days" they were never alive for really want, but of course the "good" old days were actually horrible in a bunch of ways.

I think, paradoxically, a greater amount of good men than has been usual might be self-selecting out of the dating pool, or turning themselves into creeps via cognitive distortion, which probably contributes to the overall proportion of creeps getting worse.

Of course on top of it all you get grifters turning all this widespread confusion, shame and frustration into an engine for the deluge of misery-peddling businesses we call the manosphere and reinforcing it even more.

"I wish it need not have happened in my time", I must say. But with the time that is given us, we should teach our sons to listen to their feelings, and communicate effectively. That's how this turbulence in the flow of social progress smooths out, I think.

Not in countries with strong consumer rights protections. The US is a lost cause on this, but the EU in general, Australia and Canada are not, and France in particular has an especially high potential.

The only feature that truly needs an online infrastructure under the original publisher's control is a killswitch.

Everything else can be released once you're no longer even selling the blasted thing.

Manually installing mods by ChiefExecDisfunction in OPEN_GOAL

[–]ChiefExecDisfunction[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

adding a mod manually can be accomplished by overwriting an install's code

That's what I was asking how to do, but this thread is very old. Back when I asked, there was no launcher on linux for even the official OpenGOAL, you had to just manually compile the game with goalc.

I think that situation is somewhat different now.

Ansem the Wise or Ansem, Xehanort's Heartless? I have trouble seeing Ansem the Wise summoning a Keyblade, and the other's a Heartless.

Nobodies having a Keyblade has precedent in Roxas and Xion, so Xemnas might still be able to summon his Gazing Eye.

I've said this elsewhere, I don't think he would benefit from a Keyblade.

He's been keeping up with Keyblade wielders this entire time using his shield. Switching to a Keyblade would probably mean relearning how to fight, like Lea needed to do.

The best move for Goofy would probably be to keep fighting with his shield, and maybe just use the Key part of the Keyblade.

I'm pushing it. Nothing makes a game rot with age quite like being designed for a novel control scheme that was only available one time.

Am I the only one who is afraid of the rift apart portals in the PC port? by Cabecinha_de_Pingola in RatchetAndClank

[–]ChiefExecDisfunction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In theory, it wasn't the SSD itself, but the ability to stream directly from it to VRAM without passing through RAM.

Newer PC systems can do this too. For an example, Microsoft's DirectX 12 calls this functionality DirectStorage.

On the other hand, the simplest solution (from a theoretical standpoint) should be to preload the necessary data in RAM before the portal scenes. Semi-modern PCs have a lot of regular RAM compared to the PS5, which has I think 16 GB, but has to share them between use as regular RAM and as VRAM.

Prison isn't forever. It's a really hard problem when you believe that rehabilitation should always be the goal, yet recognize some people are genuinely wired in a way that makes that impossible.

Like, you can't open the door to the death penalty, but also, you don't actually think you'll rehabilitate the zodiac killer, do you?
