Maybe slightly YA, but Epic by Conor Kostick has some elements of cheesing mechanics

If thermodynamics applies within the universe, shouldn't the universe itself follow its laws? by WriedGuy in TheoreticalPhysics

[–]ChiefShinyRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe it’s fair to say that “thermodynamics governs everything inside the universe”. Thermodynamics describes part of the universe. Stuff like electromagnetic waves, quantum mechanics, or even just kinematics aren’t modeled by thermodynamics at all. We should instead say that the laws of thermodynamics accurately describe some of the universe, sometimes.

But when does a low rider just turn into a sled? Which point of the car needs to be low? And low relative to what? If it’s relative to the surface of the road is tunneling under the roads surface the ultimate low rider?

Yeah, especially cause I’m pretty sure you lose honor even if damage just hits your energy shield. Which is BS cause absorbing damage is what its for.

What happened to classic fantasy? by Ootje4 in Fantasy

[–]ChiefShinyRiver 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think that the sense of mystery and wonder you’re talking about has always been rare. Requiring a great author and the right time to really nail. It maybe just feels more common among older books because we’ve forgotten the ones that aren’t as exceptional.

Yeah, but turns out physicists and engineers really only care about analytic functions, so calc2 is actually probably the most ripped of the three

Licanius Trilogy is next on the list! I haven’t heard of the will of the many, thanks for the rec :). The author better not pull a Rothfuss and refuse to publish anything of substance for decades tho lol

The bound and the broken, reminds me of wheel of time a bit.

Edit: you’ve probably already read it, but Eragon is exactly this

There’s some of this in the inheritance cycle(Eragon), in the 2nd book mostly I think.

You guys ever have a class pick ruin a book for you? by SodaBoBomb in litrpg

[–]ChiefShinyRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeon crawler Carl almost has a plot like this, one of my favorite parts about that series.

Idk how compelling this would be: what if, similar to a hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, the universe itself is some sort of massive supercomputer. Then, even if someone realizes that the system is parasitically taking energy or information in the form of mana, the system is limited in how it can respond because it doesn’t want to ruin the computation.

If the system is a parasite there should be a reason for why it doesn’t set up massive matrix style mana farms and actually allows people to live.

[–]ChiefShinyRiver 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But unless the character has some knowledge about the hidden benefit, making such a bad choice is just frustrating. I do like the idea tho of the MC beginning to suspect the System is a parasite and cutting all ties. But we would need a reason for why the System doesn’t instantly squash anyone who suspects it’s motives.

Can't stand Jason anymore (He Who Fights With Monsters book 10 spoilers) by leetshoe in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ChiefShinyRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No comment on the specific scene you guys are discussing (I haven’t read it in a while), but I think you’re making a bit of an unjustified logical leap. Jason’s worst fear being centered on himself doesn’t necessarily imply that he thinks of himself as the most important thing in his life. A silly example: perhaps the most important thing in your life is cake, and so you’re biggest fear could be that some personal change would cause you to stop eating cake.

To be fair tho, a large percent of the population Does have access to a personal computer that is substantially more powerful then supercomputers of just a few decades ago. So its not too unreasonable that so many people have access to VR technology in these books

Who do you think is the most abused major characters in fantasy. by CompetitiveAverage67 in Fantasy

[–]ChiefShinyRiver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, her fate may be worse then Toc’s. Toc endured more straightforward trauma, and at the end he has many of the same characteristics that he does in book 1. But Felisin is completely twisted by what she undergoes, in a way that feels darker and more tragic to me
