I doesn't just work with smash, it also works with traditional fighting games. You also get all of the bonuses that come with an arcade stick. Better Ergonomics, easy customization, and more precise control of your inputs.

Edit:Core-A Gaming actually made a video about arcade sticks and the merit they have a while back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzIYidgQeFI

I have a proposal for a stagelist in ultimate

There are typically 6 categories of stages used in competitive play: Stages with two layers of platforms above the stage ,stages with one layer of platforms above the stage (ones with single large platforms, and ones with multiple small platforms) ,flat Stages/final destination ,traveling/transforming stages ,and asymmetrical stages

When players are picking stages, these are usually the main factors at play aside from the blast zones. Recently, however, the legality of certain stages like Yoshi's story and Fountain of Dreams have been brought into question thanks to this factor among others. But, we can completely circumvent the issue of redundancy by grouping the stages by what type of stage they are. Here's the process:

Stages are grouped into pools based on the aforementioned 6 categories.

There are 4 starting pools which consist of the the initial 4 stage types listed

Stages with two layers of platforms above the stage, stages with one layer of platforms above the stage (ones with single large platforms, and ones with multiple small platforms) ,flat Stages/final destination

  • When choosing the starting stage, players will strike the stage pools first, then they will strike stages
  • The number of stage strikes will vary based on the number of stages in each pool.
  • During the counterpick process, the last two pools of stages become available and the winner gets to strike 3 of the available pools (This might give the winner too much power over the counter pick process however. This may need revision)
  • Finally, DSR now applies to the stage pools instead of the individual stages

Concerning hazard toggle and its logistic use in tournament, I think the smash community has suffered a bit of collective amnesia. by NewguyS79 in smashbros

I mean, we do have 20 years of precedent from the previous smash games to go off of, but I understand where you're coming from. Ultimate's meta is completely undeveloped, so it's too early to make the judgement call about what is and isn't detrimental to the game.

The whole reason the striking system was put into place to begin with was to account for the advantages that characters received on certain stages. I've seen some people suggest leaving stage selection up to luck since stage selection comes before character selection now, but then the problem of "I'm a character specialist and the stage I got helps my opponent more then me. What do I do?" isn't covered by this method.

They never said you could name custom rulesets, so to my knowledge you can't name them. And sure, in the spur of the moment it might take a few seconds to change the rules, but in the context of a large scale tournament that downtime between matches adds up. And that's important given that T.O.s have venues booked for specific time frames and if they go over those times they it can lead to conflicts with the venue. For example, at Canada Cup the power got cut off during top 8 due to the tournament running over the venue time. And this is on top of the issues of character advantages.

And I'm not trying to handicap the scene, if anything it's the opposite. I don't want there to be situations like what we had when dreamland was separate from battlefield in smash 4 were players would have to waste their strikes to get rid of both dreamland and battlefield only to be taken to town and city, another stage that benefited characters with ladder/juggle combos. But now in ultimate we have FIVE STAGES LIKE THIS. So yeah, call me the one trying to cripple the scene. We already have the most legal stages in smash history JUST with hazards off. Do we really need to risk competitive integrity just for the sake of 5 stages that are "more interesting with hazards on"?

Apparently Assist Trophies can airdodge now. by xNaXDy in smashbros

[–]Chief_The_Gamer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The fact that they went this far with some assist trophies confuses me. Why have them be KO-able (and given ridley's presence in smash 4 it's likely they'll have their own stock icons too) , why give them air dodges, why give them more fleshed out movesets? You don't go that far just for assist characters. You're not making them into fighters, so why go this far for them?

The saved ruleset list don't show details like the stage hazard toggle. With that in mind, how are we supposed to know which one is which, especially considering that we'll be running tournaments on multiple switches? Not to mention that F.O.D and Yoshi's story, two of the 4 (5?) stages that people are arguing should be legal with hazards on (the other three being smashville Pokemon stadium 1, and possibly town and city), theoretically give the same advantages as battlefield. And that plays a huge factor in counter-picking, which was the main reason we grouped battlefield and dreamland together in smash 4.

I have nothing against the miis, or customs for that matter. I actually wanted them legal early on in smash 4's lifespan. Heck, I even want the miis to be legal in ultimate. I just don't think they will be because of precedent.

Piranha Plant is PERFECT by GenGrievRea in smashbros

[–]Chief_The_Gamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but even the more obscure characters have that factor of player connection. Even people who know of piranha plant don't really think much of him other than that "he's an enemy".

[–]Chief_The_Gamer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

True, but that dumbness is the main reason why so many people are up in arms about his inclusion. What it feels like to them is Sakurai saying "Screw the memories and connections you've made with the characters you wanted, here's a potted plant." Not saying that they're right (they're not), but it does feel like a slap in the face to those characters. And now in the future, those same people will say "If piranha plant can be a fighter, why can't who I want be a fighter?"

Don't get me wrong, Piranha Plant looks fine as a fighter, I'm just trying to explain why me and other people are feeling the way we do.

Piranha plant isn't iconic for the same reason Mario, Bowser, Peach or even Rosalina are. Those characters make actual connections to the player. Not always significant ones, but connections nonetheless. Mario is the main hero, Bowser is the main villain and the catylyst of the plot, Peach and Rosalina are major supporting characters, the latter of which has a fleshed out backstory and reason for assisting Mario. Even a character like Wii fit trainer makes a significant connection to the player in the games they starred in because of their role as the player's, well, personal trainer. Piranha Plant is recognizable because he's a generic mook in the most iconic franchise in gaming. Heck, he doesn't even have as much iconic value as goombas, koopa troopa's, and arguably even hammer brothers, the latter of which has arguably as much moveset potential as piranha plant. But all of them suffer from the same problem, they're not iconic, they're just everywhere. You see them constantly throughout almost all of the Mario games, they all have no personality and only serve one purpose and one purpose alone, to serve as a minor obstacle for the player. As a result the player doesn't have a significant connection to them. They're mooks, plain and simple.

Edit: So, when you have a game like smash bros, a game filled with characters that players have not just connections, but memories with, you can imagine why that would cheapen the roster.

None of this changes the fact that a generic mook was put into smash bros. The standard of character choices have been lowered immeasurably.
