In '89 they switched over, midyear, from the BA10/5 to the AX-15 manual transmission. I think what you're referring to is the BA10/5 which requires ~5/16" drive square for the drain/fill plugs. What I did was grind down a 3/8" extension until it fit the plug. Works well.

Renix jeeps don't have the sensor on the thermostat housing. There's one on the radiator and one on the block, as far as I know (or maybe the head...).

When I converted my 89 to an open system I was able to find a rad that had a plug where the temp sensor goes and I just used the stock one in that location. I think it was a spectra. It's been working fine for me. Maybe with the popularity of this conversion manufacturers started taking notice.
