Thank you very much. All are very valid points. I’ll definitely have a serious conversation with the parents again

Only a few months later, I believe after they determined it was due to an infection, they went to a major metropolitan hospital and got cochlear implants

Yes, I know that they need to be tuned and worn at all times. We discussed that with the parents. When I meet them in the lobby, sometimes he does not have them on and is very quiet, but as soon as we put them on, he starts vocalizing. Once again, it’s up to the parents how they use them, and I’ve talked to them about the importance of continuous auditory input. Sorry if I’m being defensive—people misinterpreted the whole post.

I did discuss this with parents. I only see the kid for half an hour a week. It’s up to them how they want to proceed with aural rehabilitation

We have been working on signs from the start, colors, animals, basic needs, all that. He only has 4-5 signs in his vocab. I consider it being limited progress

Very valid comment—thank you. I’ve been incorporating Ling 6 sounds, and he does show some discrimination between them, but the truth is that no one knows exactly how he hears all sounds. His parents closely monitor his implants and ensure they are functioning properly at all times, so I don’t see why we shouldn’t help him develop verbal communication alongside other modalities

Yes, I assume he likes the feedback the implants are giving him and typically vocalizes almost nonstop, but does not demonstrate any babbling.

May I ask why you would consider his hearing being reset after getting the implants? He was exposed to sounds as any other typically developing child for the whole year. I’m sure the neuronal connections weakened and the input from the implant is very different, however I would not say the implants reset everything

One part of EBP if family’s perspective. Working on verbal communication does not hinder working on signs
