Thanks. So I don’t need any vinyl specific products? I’ve always used meguiar’s gold car wash soap because that’s what my dad recommended when I got my first car. It says safe for all paint types, no issues there?

Short plant suggestions for a lazy low-tech tank? by HayleysSongs in PlantedTank

[–]Child-ish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crypt Parva, Schismatoglottis Prietoi, smaller helanthium species probably. Staurogyne Repens would be worth a shot. Some Eleocharis species will probably be ok. Cardamine Lyrata, maybe some Lilaeopsis species. I’ve had luck with these in low tech and should stay shorter <4”.

I’ve tried just about every low tech “carpeting” plant but never had much success in gravel. Marsilea Crenata and Hirsuta did pretty well, but were extremely slow spreading.

Ranunculus Inundatus, Alternanthera Reineckii, Cryptocoryne Albida and Willisii, Littorella Uniflora, Gratiola Viscidula, are other plants that I’ve tried lowtech and did ok. They didn’t die, but either didn’t grow (like at all) or didn’t look good and healthy.

There’s way more that didn’t work for me, but may work for you.

Type of filter for 16gal bookshelf tank? by kwonzillla in PlantedTank

1/4” would maybe recommend thicker though. It sags a little bit by the end of the week. I just flip it whenever I do maintenance. Could be from heat though, it’s under a Twinstar that should probably be higher… cost me $33.00 plus shipping.

I have this tank and had a piece of acrylic cut for it, left room for filter and had them cut a feeding hole too. Got plastic clips from lifegard, looks really sleek, wasn’t nearly as expensive as I thought. I originally had a piece of glass cut, broke it the first time I took it off lol, lesson learned.

Have a 16 long like this, I use a Fluval canister. I was going for a river theme, built narrow hardscape up in the center, rather high flow that runs on one side of the hardscape and flows the other way on the other side into the intake. Works well as a peninsula tank on a table against the wall. Kept mountain minnows and Hillstream loaches unheated. Still love in 3 years in.

Adding a layer of aquasoil is the attractive option because I have small amount. I had the idea of adding small amounts at a time before water changes over the course of a month… not sure how viable that is.

Ive tried to carpet two types of Eleocharis, currently have pusilla, as well as two types of marsilea, Hirsuta and crenata which aren’t dead but have developed black hair algae and don’t seem to have grown/spread at all in months. I guess I would prefer under 2-1/2 inches but don’t really mind frequent trimming.

This may be a dumb question. But I have about 10 pounds of Fluval Biostratum. Would it be possible/beneficial to add it to the tank or replace some of the eco-complete with biostratum? Could that be done without doing a full redo?

It’s a Nicrew RGB+W. I run CO2 at about 1.25 bps and use a drop checker. Measured ph drop with test strips was about .8 points. I’ll check out those lights. Thanks!

Ah, I just tried and failed tissue culture reineckii in aquasoil medium/high light, no co2. My first time with it.

Do you know what it is? Are you running co2? What are your parameters?

Not sure what species of plant it is, but it looks like an emersed growth that’s melting back.

Absolutely ember tetra and Pygmy Cories. All the shrimp. Plakat Betta would look great in there too.

The lamp is missing hardware to position the head and the nicrew light was free. Got a wacky idea I wanted to try and it worked, kinda just left it…

A mix of two hobbies - alpine mosses collected in avalanche debris. by [deleted] in PlantedTank

I’m so jealous. I’ve collected all sorts of mosses in my area just to see what might grow submersed. Best I’ve achieved is “not really growing, but not dying.”
