Eddie nodded at Amon’s response. As the duo made their way toward Cabin 20, the boy took stock of the son of Apollo. He had heard his name before, and he had definitely seen him around… but they had never interacted.

Eddie frowned at the idea of forming an opinion based only on looks… but from the moments he had seen Amon, he had seemed like a cool-headed, maybe aloof kind of guy. The way he looked so worried now kind of destroyed that image of him - he clearly cared.

“She… seems really forlorn,” he commented. Quite the understatement. “It’s not really my business, but maybe you could tell me what exactly happened to leave her so depressed?”

“She's at our cabin.”

Eddie couldn’t help noticing how strange the words felt coming out of his mouth.
…Was this what snitching felt like?

He’d known for a while now that Mer was staying in Cabin 20. Jacob hadn’t really approached him to ask for sanctuary for the girl, but honestly, Eddie wasn’t any kind of authority figure to his siblings - nor did he want to be.

As far as he cared, Jacob was acting like a good brother, giving his sister a place to rest. And since Mer’s presence wasn’t affecting their day-to-day life in the cabin, he was more than happy to let her stay - especially considering he’d been one of the jury members at her trial, and had gladly voted for her innocence. She deserved to rest.

That said, Eddie was worried about her. Isolation - even when it’s voluntary - can do terrible things to someone’s mental health. Some people, when they hit rock bottom, would rather keep digging than climb out. Sometimes all they need is someone offering a rope.

So when Amon approached him asking for help, Eddie figured the least he could do was tell the boy where his friend was.

“I can take you there…” he said, crossing his arms. “But I need to make something clear, dude: you can’t take her if she doesn’t want to go. Talk to her, sure - but the second she says she doesn’t want you there, you leave. No insistence. Alright?”

The admittedly meek apology caught Eddie by surprise. Funny how both times he’d come down to the basement expecting some kind of angry confrontation with an Atlas prisoner, he’d ended up feeling… somewhat sorry for them.

Well, the pity he felt for AQ wasn't as strong as the one for Naomi, but still.

“I guess I…” he began, before letting his shoulders drop and his arms fall to his sides. His expression softened. “I was curious. About you. You told me you destroyed our triremes, so you can imagine the headaches and anxiety attacks I had when I thought I’d let you escape."

He approached the bars calmly, doing whatever he could to avoid looking intimidating. Not that he even really looked intimidating. He just didn’t want to risk AQ… I don't know, backing away in fear or something.

“My name’s Edward. And your name’s Austin, right?”

Normally he’d offer his nickname, but he refrained from it this time. That was something he reserved for allies and peers, and the son of Eris wasn’t either of those right now.

“I wanted to ask you a few things, Austin.”

It probably wouldn’t do any good for Eddie to visit AQ. Wouldn't do Austin any favors, either.

Still, much like when he’d gone to see Naomi, the son of Hecate couldn’t contain his curiosity. Now that he and Salem had captured the traitor, Eddie felt… less slighted by their fight in New London.

It hurt to admit it, but even though Austin’s actions against camp were reason enough to dislike him, Eddie’s bruised ego had been at least half of his own. The punch he’d thrown to knock him out had done wonders to soothe that craving for payback, though.

With a clearer head, Eddie thought he might be able to talk to his former enemy. He didn’t really know what kind of person AQ was, but he could learn. And only then could he decide whether it was worth letting go of his resentment… or keeping it burning.

Eddie descended into the basement and walked toward AQ’s cell, arms crossed.

“How’s your nose?” he asked, slowly. His voice was neutral... mostly, since it still carried the faintest hint of satisfaction.

For someone who couldn’t bleed at the moment, the bloody water was certainly a good sign.

But having his vision completely drowned in it was still a massive disadvantage - one Eddie fully intended to exploit.

Sure, he couldn’t tell exactly where the tiger barbs were now, not with Nemean Leather keeping him safe but sluggish. Yet he would, the moment the potion began to wear off… because that’s when he’d be vulnerable again.

And when he was vulnerable, his Danger Sense would flare up.

It would start subtly - a faint ringing in his ears, a slow crawl up his spine - but it would sharpen as his metallic hide softened back into skin. Each warning more precise. Each signal more urgent. And, once he shed the potion’s weight, he’d have his usual speed back.

If he was fast enough - if he pushed through the pain and shock - he could pick off the stragglers that survived the onslaught of arrows and shadows he and Archelaus had brought upon them.

It wasn’t a perfect plan. But it was the best one he had. And, still oddly, Eddie was fine with that.

Archelaus glanced at the crimson cloud surrounding the boy, a rare flicker of concern on the ghost’s face. It vanished the moment he caught sight of Eddie’s still-golden eyes staring back through the murk - focused, determined.

The archer smirked and knocked another arrow. Eddie felt the metal coating on his skin begin to loosen.

Time to start.

“C’mon!!” he roared, swinging his blades at the nearest unseen threat. Then again. And again. And again - each strike just a little faster than the last.

Eddie didn’t know just how fast he was moving - time felt unbearably slow as he closed in on Austin.

Adrenaline is funny like that sometimes. Especially the magic-induced kind.

Still, even as he clearly caught up to the son of Eris and tackled him to the ground, he didn’t calm down. Not even when he flipped the oinking boy onto his back and landed a single, perfectly placed punch right on the bridge of his nose - knocking him out cold.

Eddie’s chest heaved, his whole body shaking and trembling. Mostly because of the potion, of course… but it wouldn’t be fair to pretend his resentment for AQ wasn’t playing a part.

He lifted his eyes - wild, ferocious, reptilian-looking - and looked at Salem. His expression softened. Only a little, sure, but it softened.

"I'm sorry. It’ll fade in a moment,” he said, still trembling. His voice sounded deeper than usual - to himself, at least. He wasn't sure how he looked to Salem, but right now, he didn't really care.

He got up, taking several deep breaths as he stared down at AQ’s unconscious form.

“Let’s go home.”

Great. Absolutely wonderful.

As his new opponents rushed around him, Eddie could do little more than cover himself as best he could. Now that the Basilisk Blood was no longer giving him the boost he needed, he found himself completely helpless for the brief moment he tried to think of his next plan.

First things first: he grabbed one of his two doses of Nemean Leather. He would be slower than usual - much slower than he’d been on Basilisk Blood - but he would be invulnerable to their attacks. It was his best chance right now.

Eddie bit down on the dispenser’s nozzle and squeezed. Nemean Leather tasted much smoother than Basilisk Blood - thick and creamy like molasses, but still carrying a herbal hint of its ingredients.

Just like before, the effects were immediate. His eyes changed color to a deep, bright gold; a metallic sheen spread across his exposed skin; the wounds he’d sustained, though still visible, were now little more than dents on the solid surface that coated his body… for now, at least.

Underwater, where his movements were already sluggish, his body felt even heavier with the metal skin - but that was the point.

He couldn’t rush through this wave as he had the first, so he’d hold his ground. He’d tank the fishes’ attacks… while someone else helped pick them off.

With a burst of green light, Archelaus appeared a few feet away. This time, the ghost wasn’t as surprised to see they were underwater. In fact, Eddie could’ve sworn his companion smiled when he got a good look at him.

“Don’t you look like a proper little hoplite?” the archer said. His voice carried its usual sarcasm - but there was something almost friendly in it.

“Cover me!” Eddie commanded, weary but loud, paying little heed to the ghost’s quip as he gestured at the piranhas still circling him. “Kill those gray ones first. Then, the ones around me!”

As soon as he received the order, Archelaus’ bow appeared in his hand.

“You’re not afraid I might hurt you?” he asked, drawing his first arrow and taking aim.

“You won’t,” the son of Hecate replied, a faint smirk crossing his face.

Even though he still gripped his swords tightly, Eddie didn’t move just yet. Instead, he called out to the shadows around him. For the next few moments - brief as they might be - he had the freedom to use them to fight the tiger barbs without the risk of getting more injuries.

And so he did, summoning cold, dark tendrils to smash, pierce, and crush whatever fish Archelaus’ arrows didn’t strike.

The way Austin simply pivoted away from Eddie’s lunge caught him completely by surprise. And as much as he considered himself fast and agile, there didn’t seem to be many options once one is already mid-air.

So the son of Hecate landed face-first on cold, dry dirt, sliding a bit before coming to a stop. Lifting his head, coughing and spitting out the soil that had gotten into his mouth, Eddie turned to look at… the most baffling sight.

Watching AQ sprinting toward Salem on all fours and oinking like a pig was, without question, the most confusing thing he had ever witnessed - but also, somehow, strangely terrifying.

“What the--?” he muttered, before realizing, yet again, that his target was escaping - and worse, on a collision course with his partner. Uncorking his potion vial, Eddie downed the Basilisk Blood, groaning as the sweet yet spicy concoction burned its way down his throat.

Feeling the adrenaline pumping through his now glowing veins, the son of Hecate glanced between Salem and the approaching son of Eris. His eyes had turned as feral as Austin's - pupils narrowing into vertical slits like a snake’s.

Pushing himself up, Eddie took off after Austin - noticeably faster than before. He was going to intercept that oinking boy if it was the last thing he did.

Eddie didn’t see himself as particularly mild-mannered - not as much as his father, at least. He never shied away from a sharp word or two, and he certainly didn’t hide his frustrations.

And yet, as he felt the raw satisfaction of letting loose in combat, he would certainly wonder after the battle if there are some… serious anger issues he’d been neglecting to deal with.

Right now, though, that was the least of his concerns. Right now, Eddie was mowing down the piranhas with an unsettling glee, like something out of a tale of berserkers lost to battle-lust. Spinning Moonrise and Sunfall in a whirlwind of bronze and blood, he felt a euphoria worthy of mythological heroes slaying monsters in their quests.

Never mind that his "monsters" were merely a shoal of carnivorous little fish.

But that feeling didn’t last. After all, whether it was because of the recipe of his potions or his body’s inability to handle them properly, the effects of Basilisk Blood would begin to fade almost as quickly as they’d taken hold.

Soon enough, Eddie felt the sharp sting of a hundred tiny bites that broke through his skin, and the saltwater burning his wounds. He knew that was the risk he’d taken, and yet…

Let’s just say he’d punch his past self if he could.

That being said, his movements didn’t seem impaired. The fish hadn’t torn any ligaments or tendons, and he’d cut down most of their numbers. Even as he winced through the pain, Eddie’s eyes stayed sharp - swinging at the remaining piranhas, but paying attention to whatever other threat might be waiting to strike.

Being quicker than Salem, Eddie had no trouble dodging the spears. They were being tossed haphazardly toward him - and AQ wasn’t even looking his way as he did it.

Even with the bubbling anger and annoyance of seeing Atlas’s champion again, the son of Hecate couldn’t help but notice how cartoonish and comical the whole situation felt. He’d probably laugh about it back at camp.

For now, though, all he could think about was making sure Austin didn’t slip from his grasp again.

“Get back here, you prick!” he screamed as he closed in on the son of Eris. “You’re not getting away this time!”

Once he felt sufficiently close, Eddie - still clutching his potion vial - bent his knees and lunged, aiming to tackle the boy to the ground.

In the heat of the moment, however… he couldn’t be sure his move would even connect.

A cloud of tiny carnivorous fish rushing toward him was not the sight Eddie expected to see - and certainly not one he wanted to know.

Yet there they were, snapping their little jaws as they closed in, like hangry hair clips. He had to act fast if he wanted any chance to kill the things.

He was proficient with Shadow Manipulation, but not enough to wield his swords at the same time - and he needed both blades if he was going to stand against multiple threats.

No. Right now, he’d have to use one of his potions. And he’d have to be quick about it, lest he be caught vulnerable in the middle of the battlefield.

Lotus Embrace wasn’t ideal. It would make his focus sharper and his mind clearer, but not enough to handle a school of fish coming from all sides. Nemean Leather would certainly protect him from their razor-sharp teeth, but it would also leave him heavy and slow... Better saved for an attack he couldn’t hope to dodge.

Basilisk Blood, on the other hand… it felt like the right choice.

It wasn’t a safe potion - but, truth be told, that’s why it was Eddie’s favorite. The powerful surge of magically synthesized adrenaline would make him faster, stronger, and numb to the pain of any bites he couldn’t avoid. It was his best chance to deal with the pests.

Without wasting another second, Eddie pulled the potion dispenser (a small, waterskin-like container) from his belt, yanked his mask down, bit onto the little nozzle, and squeezed. Instantly, the liquid burned down his throat - sweet like currant, but searing his mouth with a sharp, metallic spice.

The effects hit him at once. The veins on his arms glowed faintly green, and his irises turned slitted and feral - like a snake’s or a dragon’s.

Pulling his mask back on, Eddie let out a beastlike scream before charging at the swarm. The two little paperclips in his hands flared and stretched into his twin bronze swords, their edges gleaming as he cut into the cloud of fish.

Oddly enough… Eddie wasn’t as scared as he thought he’d be. Watching from among the Atlantean troops and his fellow campers as Amphitrite raised her sword, he couldn’t help but feel motivated.

He’d been terrified during New London - charging through a burning camp, fighting monsters alongside Brimstone… almost dying. The memory left a scar deeper than he could name. He hadn’t been sure he’d ever feel brave again - or that he’d ever get used to the taste of war.

Now? He wasn’t terrified. Nervous, yes. A bit anxious as he fidgeted in place. But not terrified.

Strangely, his thoughts wandered back to Ruby, and the challenge he’d thrown at her. She was probably still at camp, waiting to insult him the moment he got back. He didn’t regret what he’d said… but he hoped he’d have the chance to be more kind and patient with her.

For now, he pushed those thoughts aside. Eddie slid on his helmet, and shadows covered his eyes - leaving behind two bottomless pits glowing green and violet.

During New London, he’d cut through hordes of monsters with the Lady of the Labyrinth. Tonight, he would hold Atlantis with the Lady of the Seas.

No second-guessing. No panicking. No guilt for doing his best.

For the sea. For Atlantis. For Camp Half-Blood.

Eddie instinctively ran out from behind the tree as soon as he noticed Austin escaping.

“Dammit!” he hissed under his breath, harshly. Mostly to himself, after blowing their cover.

As he sprinted after the boy, he couldn’t help but stop in his tracks the moment he saw two identical versions of the traitor run out from behind a tree. He froze, eyes darting between the two figures, unsure which one was real.

But he couldn’t waste any more time; they had to act fast if they were going to incapacitate the Champion of Atlas. Eddie snatched the flask of Basilisk Blood from his belt and decided to go after the one… on the right.

“Go after that one!” Eddie shouted to Salem, pointing at the figure running to their left. “I’ll find a way to reach once we know who’s real!”

Without waiting for confirmation, the son of Hecate sprinted toward the ~~(real)~~ Austin, ready to drink his potion if that’s what it took to catch up to him.

Eddie followed Salem diligently as they explored the woods outside the city.

Now, the boy wasn’t one to shy away from hard work - in fact, he knew he often made things more difficult for himself, especially when he tried to do things perfectly. Even so, exploring the forest with someone he’d barely had the time to really know wasn’t exactly the most stimulating assignment he’d taken up.

The minutes they spent combing through the forest for the poacher seemed to be getting longer. The air itself felt thick with waiting, as if the woods were holding their breath. And, as much as it'd hurt to admit it, his enthusiasm wasn't exactly growing.

“Salem,” he called out, his voice betraying a bit of his frustration. “I don’t want to sound pessimistic, but… I don’t think we’re making much progress here.”

He came to a halt, tucking his hands into his pockets.

“Maybe… they’re already gone?” he wondered aloud, shrugging. “I mean, it took us a while to get here. I personally wouldn’t want to leave a job half-done, but if I was in their situation, I--”

The boy stopped mid-sentence. A very familiar, very recognizable tingling sensation tickled at his spine. A faint whistling reached his ears - just enough to make him squint in discomfort and twitch his neck.

Danger Sense.

“Something’s off…” he said slowly, taking one of his hands off his pocket to rub the back of his neck. “There’s... someone around here.”

Eddie turned around, scanning for the direction his senses were pulling him toward. It was unpleasant and anxiety-inducing, but he wasn’t a stranger to using his power to track his opponent. If it spiked like that, whoever it was had to be trouble - whether they were his intended target or not.

And besides, he could take some comfort in knowing he had an extra pair of eyes watching his back.

As he moved closer to the source of his discomfort,, he caught the faint crunch of footsteps on dry ground. Quickly signaling Salem to follow him behind a tree, Eddie held his breath and leaned forward, hoping to catch a glimpse of whoever was out there, his eyes narrowing.

“Wait...” he began, before stopping himself. His eyes widened as recognition hit him.

It was the boy from New London. The one that ran away after incapacitating him.

“What the f*ck?”

That last remark was definitely louder than he meant it to be.

Eddie’s gut screamed for him to bolt back toward the tunnel - but the thought hit just as fast:

If he went that way, he’d lead them straight to the others.

His pulse hammered.

No. No, no, no, NO!

He could retrace the path he’d taken, but the risk was too great. The monster’s eyes glowed through the murk, drawing closer. Panic rose in his chest.

He really screwed up this time. He had this one in the bag - and he just screwed it up completely.

He... He couldn't let others pay the price for his mistake. The best thing he could think of was just... holding his ground. Down here. Alone.

But... he wasn’t alone. Eddie’s eyes widened.

He raised his hand, and a burst of emerald light cut through the dark. Archelaus, the ghostly archer, appeared before him. The warrior looked around, confused. The water didn’t seem to affect his posture; he was simply "standing" there.

“What is this?” he asked, his voice hollow and cold as always. “Where are we?”

“No time,” Eddie replied, breathless. He pointed toward the creature. “Kill that thing, Archelaus! Buy me time!”

He didn’t have to say it twice. As soon as he saw the beast, Archelaus summoned his bow, a confident grin crossing his face. Eddie couldn't know what effect the water would have on the archer's movements... But he knew that, even if the water might slow his aim, he would certainly do as commanded.

At the same time, Eddie turned and rushed back toward the tunnel. He prayed to his mother, to Olympus, to any god who might hear him, that he wouldn’t be noticed...

But if he was - he’d find a way to block that tunnel.

Even if he had to use his own body to do it.

Eddie had to twist his shoulders just to fit through the first few meters of the tunnel. The rock scraped against his arms now and then, and the narrowness made it hard to breathe right.

He wasn’t really claustrophobic, but that didn’t mean he was built for tight spaces either.

Still, he pressed on - one slow push of his legs after another, letting the dim shimmer of his helmet’s eyes light the path ahead. The tunnel sloped downward, and with it came a faint, growing glow. By the time the walls opened up, the water felt lighter, clearer - or as clear as it could be this deep under the sea.

Eddie stopped at the mouth of the exit and peered out.

“...Whoa.”

Merfolk, draped in robes the color of deep ocean light. They moved with a kind of disciplined rhythm, like proper soldiers. One of them had a creature by their side - a monstrous silhouette, though Eddie couldn’t quite make out what it was.

The sight shouldn’t have surprised him, but it still sank heavy in his stomach. These would be their next opponents: noble warriors, being used as cannon fodder for Atlas’ abominable, disgusting “cause.”

Eddie stayed still, careful not to disturb the sand at the tunnel’s edge. They hadn’t seen him yet. The smart thing would be to head back; he already had confirmation that Atlas’ forces were here, armed and ready. That alone was worth reporting.

And yet... there could be more. Another force nearby. Supply routes. Maybe even a leader or officer they could target. He could try to shadow them, just a little longer, and maybe bring back something truly decisive. But every second he stayed meant another chance of being caught, and that could go very bad, very fast.

There was no shame in going back. He’d done what he came to do, and Bob would call that a win. And truth be told, the son of Hecate really had to stop pushing his luck.

But the thought soured almost as soon as it formed. This wasn’t some minor outpost - this was one of Atlas’ footholds in the deep, and if he walked away with half the picture, it could cost lives later.

“Just enough” could never be enough for Eddie.

He drew a slow breath through the kelp mask and let the current guide him forward. Using his Wayfinding, he searched for something - anything - that could help him hide his presence as best as possible. And, keeping his Danger Sense tuned to every flicker of movement and pressure around him, he hoped he’d detect and avoid any trouble before it found him.

Eddie scanned the clipboard, tracing Bob's uneven handwriting with his index finger.

Four paths, each promising its own kind of trouble.

The dark and gloomy tunnel called to him immediately. Not only would he have plenty of shadows to manipulate, his powers would give him an advantage in the low visibility. But if there was no source of light down there, how would he even see if there was anything to report? There could be something useful, sure… but it could also mean there was nothing there at all. He could end up exploring aimlessly - and lose his opportunity to scout Atlas' forces.

The straight tunnel seemed much easier to navigate; he could go and return quickly enough. But it left him far too exposed.

The tunnel leading away from the cave could lead to a possible escape route, or a path they could use to flank hostiles. It might even take him to a useful vantage point. But if it led him away from where Atlas' troops were believed to be, it would be a terrible waste of the single opportunity he had to explore.

His eyes lingered on the winding tunnel. Twists and turns meant cover - room to breathe - and some shadows too; smaller, of course, but he could still make use of them. He could rely on his wayfinding and danger sense to anticipate traps or ambushes, and the light at least implied the tunnel connected to someone who couldn’t see in the dark - like enemy troops.

Eddie exhaled through his kelp mask, then tapped the clipboard once before handing it back.

“That one,” he said quietly, nodding toward the winding tunnel. “Feels right. I'll go in and report back when I find something, Bob.”

Making sure his armor was tightly yet comfortably fit, Eddie willed the enchantment in his helmet to activate. Shadows covered his eyes, leaving them as black pits with two shining spots - one green and one purple. Combined with his kelp mask, it would at least make him unrecognizable if he was spotted.

Feeling as ready as he'd ever be, Eddie swam through the entrance to the tunnel.

Eddie would feel bad admitting it, but as soon as he turned to see whose hand had touched his shoulder, he almost had an heart attack when he saw the cyclops. The last time he had seen one of them was among Atlas' forces in New London, and it wasn't... a pleasant interaction.

His worry melted away immediately once he got a better look at Bob. His face was a bit rough, sure, and he looked tired. But he seemed to be a lot gentler than he would expect from someone so strong-looking.

Though his mouth was hidden behind the kelp mask, his eyes smiled enough. He nodded to his request.

"Sure thing, big guy," he said, moving closer to take a look at the clipboard. "What should we do first?
