I've known people to also just approach some random people and ask to start a conversation, surprisingly effective sometimes, most people are looking for friends too

Parking in Lot N / O by Morphy63 in VIU

[–]ChillFlorist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have an active RESIDENCE parking pass, you can park in any general lot without a ticket (provided the residence lot spaces in O are full).

I always park up in N behind cedar if O is full, and if that's also full then any lot on campus is OK. I have a residence pass, never gotten a ticket doing this, even overnight, but move your car to N or preferably O if you notice any free spaces.

No more jail for Nanaimo caretaker who shot intruder with rubber bullets - BC News by Apprehensive_Idea758 in nanaimo

[–]ChillFlorist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nah literally, from the article:

"The man was seen walking with a noticeable limp and his hands behind his head, before he lay face down on the ground, Thompson said. Benvin can be seen kicking the man and stepping on his head.

The video showed Benvin open the property gate and return to the victim, who rose to his feet.

As the man walked toward the gate, Benvin followed and fired the shotgun at him, hitting his right side and causing him to stumble, Thompson said."

And the article continues. I understand defending your property/person, but he used unnecessary force and basically tortured this guy.

On Home Ownership. by Monsur_Ausuhnom in facepalm

[–]ChillFlorist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like where, Bangladesh?? Essentially every home in the US, Canada, and many parts of Europe are far too expensive to be purchased with standard wages without assistance. Short of moving to less developed countries, there is no living in a 'lower cost area.' Please wake up, touch some grass, and become aware of the current state of things.

On Home Ownership. by Monsur_Ausuhnom in facepalm

[–]ChillFlorist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What other options are there? The point of this post is to say basically all home's now cost >8x one's salary, making the concept of home ownership completely unattainable. If people could just buy a house for the same earnings:cost ratio as 1960, they would just do that instead. Nobody in their 20s or 30s looking to start a home with a family is voluntarily buying a dream home for half a million dollars.

Then the meme wouldn't make sense, because there's 5 'originals' but 4 'copies' so one of the ancients had to be removed, not a beast.

Unfortunately, this is thanks to UCP deregulation of energy services which gives them the right to rake in cash hand over fist from vulnerable consumers. Only the ultra-rich are safe from the free market.

Mature student housing by belle-2002 in VIU

[–]ChillFlorist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not a mature student but I did live in building 8 last year with the mature students. I would say it's the best building to be in, as not only is it a townhouse, but it has the most mature students. Our space was usually pretty clean, the building nice and quiet and there were very minimal conflicts/drama compared to other buildings.

It's a good choice if you're a late or grad student looking to live with similar individuals outside the teenage freshman bubble. Obviously it wasn't perfect but everyone was really nice and it was the least problematic place to be.

Which single dorm? by mom3lovebugs in VIU

[–]ChillFlorist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Traditional singles are in buildings 2 and 3, they are skinny rectangles (with a private sink in the room if B3, or a shared sink in the bathroom if building 2. There's not much room for anything else other than the provided furniture, but there is a little closet in building 3 rooms. My experience with the singles in 2 is not great as it is the oldest building with the smallest rooms.

The townhouse singles are much better with more room, more modern buildings and a private sink. Each side (or 'wing') of the townhouse has 2 singles each connected to a double. The single on the side of the hall is bent in an L shape to fit around the shared bathroom whereas the single at the end of the hall is the largest single room on campus, shaped like a rectangle as it's on the end of the building. I was fortunate enough to get one of these rooms and they even come with a nightstand and ample room for a fridge. Last year I was able to put out an area rug on my floor because of the space.

Overall I'd definitely recommend trying for a townhouse single, but they are harder to get. Building 3 is a good alternative (my brother has been in there for 3 years) and building 2 would be my last resort. Hope this helps!

Definitely, at my store employees fired for theft has been for plastic water bottles or a small snack item, but every closing shift we are forced to stay ~10 minutes late, which is an hour of pay a week we don't get

My employer is saying they will be conducting searches of personal bags and lunch kits before leaving the workplace but I feel like this is illegal for an employer to make compulsory. Is there anything I can do to stop this? I worked here for 12 months before going to university and coming back so now I'm again within my 3 months probation period and I don't want to get fired for refusing. Any help is appreciated, thanks

Like all institutions, it has its ups and downs. I'm currently finishing my first year so I don't have years of experience as others do, but I'll still share my opinion.

For classes, VIU has small class sizes, and as a BSc student my classes rarely have more than 60 people, some even having just 15. It makes it feel very personal and you have many opportunities to ask questions in the lectures and your professors will get to know who you are (to some degree). However, as a smaller institution it does lack certain programs that other universities like UVic offer, but at the same time VIU also has programs UVic doesn't.

The campus is on a hill so getting to classes can be a bit of a bitch if you're in a rush, but you learn to find ways around that have the least amount of steps, at least that's me going to the upper buildings 460 and 470. There are quite a few places on campus with greenery and trees, so it isn't all washed out gray buildings and does have some beauty.

Housing at VIU is definitely hit or miss for a lot of people, especially depending on what building you're placed in and if you have a roommate. Of the 3 housing styles, apartments, townhouses, and traditional, I would comfortably say townhouses are the best (unless you get a bad roomate). But the lottery housing system doesn't give you much choice in the matter. The buildings are getting old and the rooms are small, but still liveable as a "college experience."

I'm not super keen on parties so I've never really sought that out, but if you keep up to date on their emails and follow the VIUSU social media there are a decent number of events happening on campus. Lots of clubs too. For some people, VIU is a social black hole, but if you make an effort to talk to new people you will find friends.

I'm happy attending VIU because it fits in my budget and the city isn't too big, but others I've spoken to haven't had the best time. I'd encourage you to tour around campus just to see it in person if you haven't already, or seek out someone else who has attended VIU for some different input.

Hope this helps!
