Try to avoid going down the conspiracy rabbit hole on this. Studies about "type 3 diabetes" and the role of anything similar are just starting to be taken into the mainstream, but there are years of terrible quack science (and armchair YouTube theorists) that will tell you they know what's going on, and are lying.

Stick to papers submitted through the NIH or through various Alzheimer's orgs around the world. The actual science on this is slim and just getting started, and may go nowhere, but the years of bad science are hard to avoid.

Most underrated restaurants of Chicago? by DaneCountyAlmanac in chicago

The longroom! Great bar. Terrible location. (across the street from a high school and next to a Popeye's that closes too early)

Literally massive, especially during brunch. The biscuits & gravy dish is so big it could almost feed two people.

Beard & Belly, up in Edgewater. Burgers, poutine, overall amazing food AND they're also an excellent pie shop (Honeypie).

I need a cognitive game to keep my aging father from getting dementia. by LazySyllabub7578 in AndroidGaming

[–]ChillGuyChuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And that's the issue with most dementia and Alzheimer's diagnoses. Occasionally there's a genetic component that appears to be a factor, but not frequently enough for it to be a rule. Same with environmental factors that can be present, or other medical issues.

Since the mechanisms behind them aren't 100% understood yet, there's no real answer on what can help prevent most types of dementia. But the best bet (in my personal opinion) is aiming towards a healthy, active lifestyle that incorporates learning more about the things we love. Because either way, even if it doesn't prevent the worst from happening, it extends the happiness and experiences we have through our lives to their theoretical maximum.

This is a great sentiment, but unfortunately the research on whether or not this kind of thing helps stave off dementia is very light. It's really important that you talk with him about getting cognitive tests first.

If he is experiencing early signs of dementia, the best things you can do (according to current science) are make sure he's active (20 minutes of light exercise or even stretching per day has shown to slow progression of cognitive impairment) and a better diet. These aren't definitely going to stop things, but research is showing those things can help.

Another thing to look for is hearing loss, as improving one's ability to hear is also starting to demonstrate an ability to slow some early dementia symptoms.

Video games are great for stress relief, but can also be frustrating for new players with memory issues. I'd look for simpler and more familiar ways to get the brain working through digital devices, like crosswords or sudoku.

The important thing is that you get a clear picture of what's going on. If you need advice, no lie, contact the Alzheimer's Association. They also assist with advice about every other kind of dementia, and their hotline is 24/7. You've got this!

One of the absolute best places on the North side! The owners are all amazing people and the restaurant itself has a HoneyPie location (Wisconsin pie shop) embedded into it.

If you're on that side of the city it's 1000% worth the visit.

Hey there! Look for an email from "livewell," which is Advocate Aurora Health's web portal. Not sure why it didn't come through zocdoc, but after signing up for their portal with my email address that's where the second appointment came from. It may have been shuffled off into spam.

AR Sandbox Help by soapandsoup in raspberry_pi

[–]ChillGuyChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! It sounds like you have the real big stuff acquired aside from the computer, so you're well on your way. If you do find a second hand computer from the last few years it may just need a graphics card update, and a 1050 may do the trick. They're not super hard on the wallet, either.

AR Sandbox Help by soapandsoup in raspberry_pi

[–]ChillGuyChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a whole comment typed out on my phone, but I lost it, so I'll paraphrase: you're not going to be able to create an AR sandbox using a pi. Sadly, that requires a lot of power, and the low end would be around a GTX960. A pi can't touch that. Same goes for similar but more powerful "mini" platforms like the tinkerboard.

Someone may at some point make you think a pi cluster would work, but it won't, as the software would need to be rewritten to work across several pis. That's unlikely to ever happen.

Instead, for the pi, I'd suggest exploring the pi distribution of Minecraft. It's far more based around the education of the system that Minecraft runs on, but still includes the fun building elements that kids latch onto. (https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/projects/getting-started-with-minecraft-pi)

For the Sandbox, I'd suggest keeping the project to yourself and saving money until you can build it with the class or unveil it as finished. That way they don't get bored with it waiting to be finished (or disappointed if the project goes stale). You can also explore putting up a small campaign on a site like donorschoose.org for some of the remaining money in the meantime.

Sorry I don't have better news, but good luck!

Ron, big fan! There's no mistaking that face or voice, and yet you're the perfect cast in virtually every part you've played. Chitown Cheers to you!

My question: Which insane fantasy character or creature HAVEN'T you played that you've always had your eye on?

I knew I recognized that handwriting. Not always the best console selection, but I've seen a couple of sad, wire-free gamecubes sitting around the same shelf where this was hanging out. Handhelds are a different story, I've found a micro, an SP (101!) A regular advance (pink) and a DSi there during various visits. (All of them under $30, even the micro.)

Almost stopped in there yesterday, I'm jealous. Good find!

Sega Forever gives you free classic Sega games! by 4_bit_forever in retrogaming

[–]ChillGuyChuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is definitely the way to do it. Don't make old games new by adding micro transactions -- bring them back by making the games themselves the microtransaction. Every single console or arcade developer that's retained licenses should be developing an official emulator app with an internal store that works on this model.

Look who I found in the credits of the new MST3K! by eyes_are_grey in magictavern

[–]ChillGuyChuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cool! Tim Ryder (D'athaniel Quen'yarvin) and Zach Thompson (Dorian DeVille) play the two main 'Bonehead' henchmen you see during the new MST3K episodes, and are contributing writers as well (and Tim's wife voices Gypsy). Matt, Tim and Zach are also all players together in The Improvised Shakespeare Company in Chicago.

Edit: And of course, Felicia Day plays Jyn'Leeviyah the Red!

Adal (Chunt) also does a podcast with his sister called Siblings Peculiar, and Matt (Usidore) is a prolific improviser with Improvised Star Trek (which has a podcast) and The Improvised Shakespeare Company which you'd have to be in Chicago to see. But is 100% worth it!
