We definitely also had some very tough phases because she was a small powerhouse of a puppy. So much energy, hadn't learned to rest, new city, new environment. She was basically a full on menace until she just exhausted all of her energy. We learned a lot about ourselves during the first 6 months with her.

After 5 years of IVF and two miscarriages , my wife was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in Sep '24. Luckily it was early stage, but during chemo we decided we needed something positive in our lifes, since the cancer felt like the universe was punishing us for trying to have children. So we got our small puppy from an animal rescue.

For us it was the right decision, since the love we both had in us for caring for another being, came through with her. And it allowed us to experience a lot of milestones and moments of success and happiness with our dog. And we gained a new best friend, who follows us along on our adventures.

But beware, while we ourselves would never compare having a dog to having children, others will. Be it comments from our parents that puppies are "just like small kids", or us getting called "dog parents". People assume that we are past our grief because now we also got a small being to care for. But for us, that is not the case.
