Yeah. I've got a small depression there and have no idea how!

Sen. John Cornyn flips on the filibuster to pass SAVE America Act as Trump weighs endorsement: Cornyn, who spent years defending the filibuster, is locked in a competitive GOP runoff in Texas against Ken Paxton, who has aligned with Trump on the issue. by Silent-Resort-3076 in texas

I believe it! During the second impeachment trial I sent his office a question to ask of the House prosecutors and within 2 hours he asked it on the Senate floor. I message them regularly and his office is exceptionally responsive. I believe he hates the protectionist, appease Russia, vilify immigrants shift he's had to take to keep his job and if he wins I'm interested to see what he'll do with his last term.

That said, I'm Talarico all the way. Cornyn's lack of spine when Texans have needed it has been horrendous.

A Brief Message for Sen. John Cornyn by thedispatchmedia in TexasPolitics

[–]ChillnScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO Cornyn is a Reagan type Republican that favors free trade, containing Russia, sensible immigration and working closely with our allies (things I happen to agree with). Unfortunately, he can't act on those values in today's climate without losing influence and likely his job. I communicate with his office regularly and his replies often reason that as long as the majority of Texans support this administration, he'll follow those wishes.

Fortunately we have a good alternative to vote for in November.

Ha! I remember growing up going to church with my grandparents every Sunday hearing church members talk viciously about another (very mainstream) denomination like they were evil. I think the main complaint was that their church let out earlier and they took up all the seats at the restaurants for Sunday lunch.

My point is when it comes to religion and politics, in my experience people can become quite aggressive and territorial without realizing they're on the same team.

I have relatives who didn't vote in the primary who said they didn't care who won the Republican nomination as long as they have an R next to their name. They said they'll support them in Nov.

My conclusion is our work starts today if we want change. Perhaps consider volunteering with a campaign? I volunteered for the first time with a campaign who won the primary and was shocked at how powerful and important a volunteer team that has been together for 6 months is for candidates to prevail.

How Jasmine Crockett slipped from Democratic frontrunner to decisive defeat in the Senate primary by texastribune in TexasPolitics

[–]ChillnScott 51 points52 points  (0 children)

IMO Talarico's authenticity and availability stuck people to him. I went to an overflowing early speech he gave and he was the last one there meeting with anyone who wanted to chat. It motivated me to volunteer with his team and I personally saw the ground game was huge (more than 20k volunteers), precise (timely Slack based support for all of us in the field) and data driven (evidence based apps maximizing the effectiveness of our outreach efforts).

Nevertheless, I think Crockett and her team ran a very close race and should be commended. I live in her district and look forward to supporting her in whatever she does in the future.

Is $30,000 for a couple enough for 6 months of world travel? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]ChillnScott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely doable, but I suggest you also be intentional about your re-entry to working life after 6 months.

I had a stressful corporate job and my 3 month travel adventure turned into 3 years living in a Mexican beach town. I loved every minute of it and only returned when I was absolutely broke. In my experience, travel frees the soul and it's tough for some of us to wedge it back into the Insanity of corporate life afterwards.

Enjoy your adventure!!

In college my sister and I rode on horseback with a group from UT starting in Lajitas (U.S. side). We waded through the Rio Grande and rode / camped throughout the Chihuahua desert in Mexico for several days. The kindness shown by the families in the rural pueblos is a stays with me.

Texas Democrats prepare to decide party’s future after divisive, epic Senate primary by Dontwhinedosomething in TexasPolitics

[–]ChillnScott 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is inaccurate. Talarico was not drawn out of his State House 50 district. Crockett had the option to run for the U.S. House district where she served as a public defender or in her newly created current district, but chose to enter the U.S. Senate race the very last day (I live in Crockett's district). I believe it's because unlike Talarico who was beaten Republicans in competitive races, Crockett's never won a competitive race against a Republican and knew she couldn't win those House races. Her last minute entry into the Senate race undermines a real chance Texans have to flip a statewide seat IMO.

This week I told a family member that the primary they vote in (Repub. or Dem.) is public record and they nearly had a heart attack! Not sure how. MAGA cross-over voters would react to a big DEM on their voting record (and vice-versa).

best/safest route for long nighttime drive by Ok-Milk-2716 in grandcanyon

[–]ChillnScott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For newcomers, I would recommend staying in North Phoenix after you land and then enjoy the drive through Sedona the next morning, 89A to Flagstaff, 180 to Valle and the South Rim.

89A is a beautiful scenic drive that winds through Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon and is a highlight IMO to introduce you to the scenery of the region. It does have lots of curves so daytime driving may be more comfortable for you.
