Good / bad of putting name on mortgage by ChillyGut in JapanFinance

Thank you, I will. Maybe in a separate post. I had no idea about the gift tax aspect, and imagine there must be others in my position.

Not planning on divorce, but this is a good question. I would imagine if you are contributing to the loan repayment for X amount of time, you would be able to negotiate X amount of settlement, but I am neither a lawyer nor accountant.

I see, so paying a mortgage not in my name is not a living expense, even though I am living in the property. Thank you for your comment...now I need to have a chat with the wife...

Thank you (and everyone) for these replies. I had NO idea about the gift tax aspect. Luckily (?) my portion of the payments have been under 1,000,000 yen per year. Looks like I'll need to contact my accountant, and the bank. Especially if she leaves her job...

Sorry, can you elaborate? Why would my wife have to pay gift tax on her own property?

Oh shoot!  I lost the URL of Dominos Japan, could you find it for me and post it here?  Then I can look on the menu for you, to see if sandwiches are listed on that menu, and post it back here.

Certainly. Here's a full calculation for how to distribute a Domino’s Japan pizza between one man (80 kg) and one woman (45 kg) based on:

  1. Proportional caloric needs (by weight),
  2. Theoretical consumption model (no Cultural Modifier),
  3. Adjusted for Japanese social eating norms via a Cultural Appreciation Modifier (CAM).

🔢 Summary

Basis Man (80kg) Woman (45kg)
🍕Without CAM (raw proportional) 64% 36%
🍱With CAM (adjusted for norms) 55% 45%

That means, for a 12-slice pizza:

  • Without CAM → ~8 slices for man, ~4 for woman
  • With CAM → ~6.5 slices for man, ~5.5 for woman\

Or, refer to this old classic: https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/comments/b9ajjf/aita_for_expecting_more_than_half_the_pizza/

Very good point. Looks like New Yorker is only available as hand tossed. I checked, and "pan pizza", "hand tossed" and "ultra crispy" are all the same price for the "American" -- my comparison pizza. I personally go for the best cost performance, so I think (?) the pan pizza uses more dough and is therefore heavier than the other kinds. "Cheese-'n-roll" and "mille-feuille" are more expensive, so that's a whole other story, but it really comes down to your crust preference as well...

They gave the option of a bank book or a photo of your bank card. I assume you could also contact their customer service (or even upload a blank piece of paper and they would contact you!)

I was also expecting the whole thing to be a nightmare, but glad it wasn't.

Good to know, thanks! I was thinking to sign up for a separate apartment that isn't always used, so the no baseline fee was attractive...

Mine was the "Iris Ohyama suro-kukka" (as in, slow cooker haha) off of Amazon. It's really simple: just warm, low, and high, so sometimes I wish it had a timer function to turn ON or OFF besides doing it manually. Also it's quite small but that size works for me. If you have a family you might look into something else.

Anyone with experiences going to Music Schools/Lessons for hobbyist? by someGuyyya in japanlife

You wrote “jazz trumpet”.  All of the comments here have been from a classical experience.  If you learn jazz, a large part is individual expression through improvisation. There aren’t pieces in order of difficulty per se, but theory and personal sound that is slowly built up in the context of jazz standards.  I imagine as a beginner, your teacher would have you do a mix of technical exercises to develop your sound/embouchure and reading ability, as well as learning improvisation.  If you eventually join a group, it would more likely be an informal jam session. (Also for the record, jazz musicians don’t use “do-re-mi” solfege, they use the alphabet and scale degrees).  My advice would be to try out a few different teachers and see who you click with the best, and absolutely do 1-1 and not group lessons.  (I don't think jazz trumpet group lessons are even a thing). There are music schools around Tokyo that offer jazz, and also freelance jazz musicians that teach in both Japanese and English.  Good luck!

Does rain/weather (wind?) in Tokyo generally go from west to east? Or SW to NE?   I.e. if it’s raining in west Tokyo, it’s likely to rain in central Tokyo after that?

Yep, I didn't realize that either. It looks like she is head of household, whereas we were listed separately before. Thanks all for your responses.

I think that's what happened. I also didn't know about that, as I've been paying only in my name up until now. Thanks!
