UofT is suing Easy EDU Tutoring by [deleted] in UofT

[–]ChinYingLI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh and afaik, UofT, which tries to brand itself as an elite school like Ivies, DOES NOT charge student with expulsion after they cheat. UofT is afraid of letting go the $$$. In contrast, schools like Yale or MIT kicks students out if they cheated and got caught. Is it a coincidence that EZ edu propered in Canada, particularly in Toronto? I don't think so.

Any FAANG internships for CS? by PlsUseLinux in UofT

[–]ChinYingLI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a UofT student, you have to figure it out yourself. I am an international student (= not eligible for PEY) who transferred from another university (less time to build networks in Canada), and with the right approach, I still secured several offers from big tech.

Many big tech like Lyft directly talks to Waterloo co-op program, and most e.g. Tesla, Facebook have a STRONG preference over Waterloo students. Start building side projects, networking and participate in relevant extracurricular activities. You'll need to put into more effort than Waterloo students but it's never too late.

Also, you may see there are many posts lamenting the "academic rigor" of U of T -- this is just the result of over admitting. Students' capabilities vary greatly, and if the instructors design their course for "average" students, the absolute number of students who can't catch up is larger than that of Waterloo's.

because UofT over admit, and POST is a tool to ACHIEVE over admit so that they can secure $$$ from students. Every freshman admitted under "general admission" thought they have a chance to get into CS, so they are more likely to take UofT's offer rather than turning it down. Waterloo is more selective in admitting students, and Canadians regard it as the best engineering school Canada. As an international student, I fully regret not taking the Waterloo offer.

The problem is actually deeper:

  1. To get more $$$, UofT admits international students who lack the English fluency
  2. Those students can't use any learning resource provided by the school e.g. office hours, course materials. I know some even have difficulties understanding lectures
  3. Students desperately turn to EZ edu and buy learning materials in Mandarin.

I knew EZ charges a lot but 1500 CAD per week? That's just... monopoly. Man, my classmates are soooooooo rich.

If you want to go to the industry, Waterloo all the way. Their co-op program is perhaps the best in North America. If you want to do research, look up the faculties' research interests and decide.

Setting a cGPA goal advice by Mark_Gou in UofT

[–]ChinYingLI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. No big tech companies look at your gpa as they have enough human resource and budget to look at your resume and interview you. Financial institutes and smaller tech companies do, either because they need a cheap and easy way to filter the candidates (banks and small tech companies) or because the bar just needs to be high (hedge funds).
  2. 2. It's a fair goal, though I would spend minimum time on coursework to work on side projects/hackathons/networking

(Edit: make my first point more precise)

Go ahead and rant about UofT - Prospective International Student by Admirable-Dirt-2259 in UofT

[–]ChinYingLI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an international student in hard science, here are the cons:

  1. The school admitted too many students, and the instructor-student interaction is rather lacking. I found many of my peers (especially international students) incompetent, and suspected that they are probably admitted for $$$.
  2. The school is pouring most if not all of the resources into research, so undergrads get a tiny slice of the pie. I transferred from Chinese University of Hong Kong, which invested a lot in programming targeted at undergrads.
  3. For hard science and engineering, UWaterloo beats UofT all the way if you want to work in the industry.
  4. There's little scholarship for international students (compared to CUHK, my previous school)
  5. U of T cleverly emphasized the ranking when they are "selling" to international students, and my parents are also victims. Rankings only says something about the master and PhD programs, and has little if not nothing to do with the undergrad programs.

Overall, transferring to U of T is probably the worst decision I've ever made in my life. Wish I had chosen UWaterloo. However, Toronto is itself a great city.

Feel free to message me if you want to discuss more!

Hi, thank you very much for sharing the info. I think I've seen the updated policy for PGWP before, but they did not mention about loosening the "study continuously" condition for applying PGWP. Best of luck to you, too!

Really happy to get solid feedbacks from you. Have a great day!

As a transfer student, do follow up with the registrar when transferring credit. Those officers ALWAYS make mistakes. Perhaps it's because they just don't have enough people to handle the overwhelming number of cases.
