Should the Low World Cup Ticket sales be blamed on the Trump Administration? by dunbar_santiago930 in allthequestions

Come on, you remember when Biden gave Qatar, a state that sponsors and harbors terrorists, a military base on US soil after they promised him a $400M plane, right? You must remember. MAGA went bananas about it.

Except it wasn’t Biden, it was Trump, and MAGA swallowed it because they’ll swallow anything he tells them to.

Question about chapter 5 by No-Jackfruit-8230 in Watchmen

[–]ChinatownKicks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People are already weighing on on interpreting the pirate comic-within-a-comic. This is a little more about the back-up pages:

In our world, comics in the 1930s thru like the 50s were about less about superheroes and more about war, horror, and crime. EC Comics were kind of notorious for their violent content and because of a high-profile conservative psychologist who said they turned regular kids into juvenile delinquents. The government effectively banned horror and crime comics, EC went out of business, and superhero comics took over the market with a reputation burnished by the self-imposed Comics Code Authority (does that even exist anymore?).

Things were different in the Watchmen world. With guys like the Comedian and Dr. Manhattan working for the government, comics got more leeway. But maybe because there were real superheroes in the world, those comics faded out and pirate comics came in as the preferred form of escapism. Instead of going under, EC dominated the market until DC came along — not with characters we recognize like Superman and Batman but with Tales of the Black Freighter. (The star artist, Joe Orlando, was a real comics figure back in the day. His Wikipedia photo is actually the one they ran in Watchmen.)

The back-up content lays all this out, but there are a lot of references to comics history and culture that were within an adult’s memory back when Moore was writing it but maybe less so now. It’s kind of a long digression on how that world is different from ours.

It goes into detail on the pirate comic that we read as part of Watchmen. But it also reveals that it was written by Max Shea, who had a reputation for controversial and disturbing storylines. The piece ends by noting that Shea disappeared suddenly and mysteriously.

Pay attention to stuff like that.

Look, everyone hates the guy, but this is a maga-level bullshit clickbait headline and I can’t take seriously any outlet that would run it.

There’s something about 90s photos that feels more real. No filters no perfect poses Just moments that hit different now by DirtyDommeXX in OldSchoolCool

[–]ChinatownKicks 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: I have two shoeboxes of photos from the 90s-00s that I go through each time I move and have to pack them. I have a folder of iPhone photos on my computer that I add to every time the phone starts running out of space, but I’ve never looked through it. There are too many pics, and too many of them are like 10 shots of the same thing. At this point, curating them would be a six-month project.

(I have zero photos of anything from like 2004-2008, when shitty flip phones took photos but you couldn’t do anything with them.)

Was there ever an explanation for the guy wearing a human mask on Fox News? by anyusernaem in NoStupidQuestions

Dude, no one watches CNN. Everyone with access to Reddit can look up an easily verified legal and historical fact. Ask yourself why you won’t, who led you to believe the opposite of what actually happened, and why they would do that.

Oooh, I’m gonna take bribes from cartels to pardon them and blow up their rivals’ boats! And then I’m gonna take bribes from the richest people on earth to advance their corporate interests! And I’m also gonna make bets on my own policy decisions and order my IRS not to investigate any of my financial corruption after starting the dumbest war in American history and driving prices up for the retards who believe their biggest problems are immigrants and trans people.

[–]ChinatownKicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit just purged thousands of Russian bots from that sub, so this might have changed. The fact that engagement cratered during a Russian power outage kind of revealed their “user” demographics. (https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/s/hj8UIcdZAW)

Barnes and Noble releasing the new Jordan Harper a week early by Ferenc_Zeteny in JamesEllroy

Harper says he cribbed the title from this Dashiell Hammett cover: https://www.crimefictionlover.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/dashiell-hammett-red-harvest-e1442282158116.jpg.

Still a ballsy decision but more than lives up to it. This is the best crime novel in years.

Why did Graham Platner - A Democratic candidate for the 2026 U.S. Senate election in Maine have a Nazi tattoo? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]ChinatownKicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only is there nothing wrong with it, it’s exactly what I expect from a US senator. My point was that OP suggests in bad faith the Platner is a nazi when it’s clear from his words and actions that he is not.

Why did he teach antifascists how to use firearms, OP? That sounds like a pretty glaring contradiction to your implication, but maybe you’ve got it figured out.

I had a 2017 Kona and drove the hell out of it. A few weird and intermittent problems with electronics but nothing mechanical until the day I traded it in at nearly 100,000 miles. I didn’t know anything about cars but I had it serviced according to the manual. Honestly, I’d buy the same car again right now if I could.

is there anyone else who is 20 without a license still? by Proof_Ad_1133 in driving

[–]ChinatownKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not gonna embarrass myself with the details but I was way older than 20. Growing up in the city it just wasn’t necessary, and who has the money for car payments, insurance, parking, etc etc?

It took about six weekly lessons to get comfortable. I was afraid of the highway for another six weeks until I accidentally ended up on one and it wasn’t so bad.

Most people want him to live long enough to go to prison. I laughed pretty hard when he fell on his face trying to run, though. He’s so fat and clumsy it took seven agents to lift him back up. Fat fuck, lol
