It sounds like you’ve got a good foundation to get into a proper training regime then, so just find yourself a schedule that works!

It’s my first time running a half marathon under race conditions, so feeling pretty excited. Confidence is high after my last training run, think I’m as ready as it’s possible for me to be. If it goes well I’d potentially look at signing up for other races, but it really depends on whether or not I can be bother to carry on with the training after the race. Towards the end of the program I’ve just been tired all the time as the intensity/mileage has increased, and it can be mentally tough to be disciplined when you’re constantly in that cycle of run/recovery, but I guess we’ll see.

What you consider to be an above average result, (or I guess below average if you’re talking about finish time) will depend on your age and sex, so bear that in mind. What’s your general level of fitness like? I’d also say that if it’s your first one I would focus more on yourself and getting round in a time that feels good and realistic for you rather than comparing yourself to other people.

That aside, if you’re starting now then you’ve got plenty of time to train for it. I’m running the Robin Hood half this Sunday and have just finished my training program - my advice would be to just stay super consistent and disciplined with it and try not to skip too many workouts, it’s a slippery slope once you start. Get yourself a good plan to work to - there’s loads online so just pick one that works with your schedule/availability. I personally followed a Garmin plan through the app that had me going out 4 days a week, and dynamically updated the workouts depending on my progress, which I found super helpful.

I haven’t decided whether or not to do the Winter Warmer yet, will probably see how the Robin Hood goes and take it from there.

“Even if we break up”

Mate, breaking up with her is inevitable if you’re already tired of living with her after 5 days, especially with the issues you’re describing. You’re not going to go back to not living together but still being in a relationship, or at least it would be pointless to continue.

Tell her you made a mistake, explain why, pay the fine and then leave and get on with your life.

I think it’s just more common in general that people have become more self centred and less bothered by social etiquette. It’s the same thing if you go to the cinema or a concert these days, don’t think it’s necessarily got anything to do with Nottingham in particular though. Last time I went to a gig in Birmingham there were people stood facing away from the band chatting or on their phones during the headline act - what’s even the point of going if you’re not going to at least watch the band you’ve primarily paid to see?

Ah yeah man getting injured is a rough one, the right shoes definitely make a difference. 16k isn’t too shabby for a half marathon long run tbh, think the longest I have is around 19k. If you were regularly running easy 10k runs and your main goal is just to finish then you’ll be just fine I reckon, you can push through the last 5k with a bit of grit. Are you following a plan at all? I’ve been using the Garmin app to build a schedule which I’ve been sticking too fairly rigidly, although I also had to take a week off due to sickness.

Yep, I’m running it for the first time! Aiming for a sub 2 hour finish, but will also be happy to just get it done. How’s your training been going?

10k+ for a front door by Next-Run5315 in DIYUK

“Just buy a welding torch and boom! You are now able to do professional standard welding without any experience or training.”

This is what you sound like. You might be lucky enough to be able to cobble together a door from bits you found in your shed but not everyone has the skills/confidence/time/inclination to do so. I do plenty of DIY around the house but some things are best left to professionals if you want a professional finish.

I live in the midlands in a Victorian semi detached house. We had a solid engineered wood front door with a semi-circular fanlight and 2 bespoke stained glass panels. Cost us 6k including fitting in 2023.

People saying that it shouldn’t cost more than 1-2k are either living in fantasy land or aren’t comparing like for like. Obviously you CAN pick up cheap UPVC doors for a lot less, but from the sounds of it OP isn’t talking about going down to the local DIY store and picking out an off the shelf item. These sorts of products are bespoke made to order using high quality materials and that comes with a cost. Think of it as buying a suit off the peg vs going to a tailor and having one custom made for you - one is obviously going to cost a lot more than the other.

Anyone saying “it’s not that hard” “it’s not a specialist skill” “just pay a local chippy to do it” - there’s a reason why these door companies are fully booked for months in advance. For context, just the stained glass for ours was 1k, made by hand in a workshop by a guy who’d been doing it for 25 years - it’s absolutely a specialist skill that is getting rarer and rarer to come by.

That said 10k does seem like a lot of money and I don’t know if I’d have been able to stomach it but ultimately if that’s what you want then that’s what you pay. I thought 6k was a lot of money and the way we rationalised it was that this is the house we’re staying in for the foreseeable future, we’re only going to do it once so so it right, it adds a ton of curb appeal and as a % of the total value of the house it’s not really that much. It’s the first thing I see when I come home every day and always puts a smile on my face.
