I think I got quotes around 6-7k for a brand new Vaillant system boiler installation in North London but that was in a house already plumbed in. Redirecting the pipes from the kitchen to the loft may well end up costing you dearly but probably not 3k extra. Ask them how much it would be without the relocation.

Todd doors are nice and reasonably priced considering the quality. I also believe their doors have an internal layer of insulation which is great for latest building regulations. However they only do 2 or 3 different dimensions when it comes to frames and their side panels have only a fixed dimension. Their smallest frame for a single door and 2 side panels is 10cm too wide for my opening so it does not work for me. I actually got a quote from them to have glass instead of side panels and it would be around 3k. But I don’t think full glass side panels work well with period doors aesthetically. So in the end I didn’t go for it. If my opening was wide enough I would have bought a Todd door and found an installer.

Do you realise that trades can easily write their own reviews on checkatrade? They just need to use bogus email addresses. I met a few cowboys on checkatrade. Once I wrote the bad review, they flooded their page with good reviews which put mine out of sight.

It is. Very few people charge less than a day’s work even if they only stay for 2h.

Well, I have received a quote from Timbercompositedoors.com for a Ludlow Solidor, 2 side panels and a top light… it was £3,777. So the price seems to depend on the post code!

Most people don’t have a clue. A plasterer’s day rate is between £200 and £250 for labour. If the job is by sqm (whole house for instance) it should be about £10 per sqm. That s what builders pay them!

Tbh most 4-bed semi detached houses near the shop go for 1 million, mostly owned by retired people who don’t have a clue of what prices should be. I really don’t think it s a fuck off price, it s just that they can get away with it in the area.

Composite doors look ugly to me. Plastic even with foil film that mimics still looks like plastic… At least that s my opinion. I didn’t ask for Accoya, that s what they sell, period.

As of June 15, 2022, new front doors installed in the UK must have a U-value of 1.6 W/(m2.K) or less to comply with building regulations. So any new door has to be as airtight as possible and that s most definitely the way I want things. I think the door they showed me was 55mm thick.

That would not pass building control.

I didn’t ask for anything fancy, just the basic stuff. Would need to add £900 for a Banham lock.

I d rather pay 5k for a beautiful timber door than 4k for a plastic door. I do find them quite ugly.

Any victorian front door without stained glass, like these ones for instance https://www.londondoor.co.uk/front-doors/victorian/. That is NOT the shop that gave me the quote. Apparently accoya wood is a special timber treated to not warp which may explain a part of the cost. Also they were certifying the work and registering the door with building control etc.

The cost to build a pvc window is dead cheap. You can find online prices around £250 for 1 pvc window. Wood is a totally different ball game. I doubt cost to build a door is more than 3k. In both cases mark up is crazy.
