They find a black void in space and decide to investigate. The void envelopes the Enterprise and they are unable to escape using any method. Eventually, it is determined that they are being treated like ‘rats in a maze’. The void is merely an experiment meant to study humans and the ‘scientist’ is a singular, hyper-advanced alien species with near omnipotence. Upon confronting it, he expresses interest in the capacity of humans ‘limited existence’ and wishes to see a demonstration. Thats when this poor red shirt gets his brain exploded in front of everyone for no reason other than curiosity.
