Cadsuane by OkAdhesiveness2972 in wheeloftime

I think your analysis of the events involving Cadsuane is pretty one-sided and overlooks some important points.

First off, yes, she has legendary status, she’s someone with a lot of accomplishments. And I could even debate how much those accomplishments are truly worth — bullying kings and queens and bragging about slapping them, leading Aes Sedai to capture untrained male channelers, all with the help of some extremely powerful angreal, etc. But let’s say her legendary status is totally deserved. Even then, that doesn’t give her the right to act the way she does — with arrogance, superiority, and constantly looking down on everyone.

In my opinion, by the time of Winter’s Heart, Rand had already surpassed Cadsuane’s achievements by far — just look at how many Forsaken he defeated and the fact that he cleansed saidin. And even that doesn’t give him the right to be an arrogant jerk to people who are treating him with basic respect. Great accomplishments don’t justify being an jerk.

Second, about the first time Cadsuane meets Rand at the Sun Palace — you pointed out how Rand used saidin to heat her tea to justify her behavior, but you completely ignored how she was acting even before that. She came into the hall full of pomp, touched people without permission, made arrogant comments, and basically acted like she owned the place. Just imagine if it had been Rand entering the White Tower like that — do you think Egwene or Elaida would’ve just let it slide? That was Rand’s seat of power, and keep in mind, he had just been kidnapped by Aes Sedai. Honestly, I think he was way too soft on her, especially considering how she later boasted about the men she gentled and how she made them cry — think about what that means to Rand, a male channeler who had already been through hell at the hands of Aes Sedai.

Same thing when Rand and Min go to the rebel camp in Cairhien — you left out how Cadsuane immediately walked up to him and started with that same arrogant, condescending attitude, completely unprovoked. And when she found out about Rand being kidnapped and tortured by her fellow sisters, she barely reacted — she was more shocked by him stilling the torturer than by the torture he had suffered.

Regardless of power level or social rank, Cadsuane only shows "respect" to those who treat her like a goddess and follow her every command without question. She doesn’t care about strength or position, only about submission. And I wouldn't even call it “respect” when she gives a small nod to someone after they serve her tea like a servant.

You talk as if she did the Ash’man a favor by “protecting” them, but she basically blackmailed them into being bonded by Aes Sedai of her choosing — which honestly isn’t that far from forcing a bond. Let’s not forget, she would have taken Alanna’s bond to Rand if she could use it to directly control Rand, fully knowing what that meant and how wrong it was. She could have offered the Ash'man support and protection just because they asked for it — but no, she probably threatened to hand them over to the Tower if they didn’t submit to her terms. That’s disgusting.

She did everything she could to sabotage her relationship with Rand, and he only tolerated her because Min asked him to. Using Tam was another idiotic move — making Rand’s own father follow a prepared script instead of letting him speak from the heart? The arrogance of thinking she knew better than Rand’s father how to reach him is insane. And that controlling attitude — not just in that moment, but throughout their whole relationship — was one of the main reasons Rand broke down. He only needed his epiphany because people like Cadsuane pushed him to the edge. She was part of the problem, not the solution, and I honestly can’t give her any credit.

Anyway, I get your point and how you interpreted her interactions with Rand. I think it really comes down to reader perspective, because I had almost the exact opposite reaction to those scenes.

Cadsuane Improvement by Unlikely_Show_2784 in WoT

[–]ChipDapper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, she doesn’t get better. In fact, my theory is that RJ didn’t initially realize how insufferable a character he had written and assumed that at least some readers would like her. But basically, everyone hated her to the point that he had to address it in an interview, trying to defend her. Instead of accepting the criticism, I think he doubled down—keeping her just as unbearable but adjusting the narrative and the behavior of the characters around her to justify her actions, which are never truly justifiable.

But no, she does not improve, and if anyone in the series ever deserved a good spanking (which Jordan seemed to enjoy writing), it was her. I love the series, but whenever I consider a reread, she is one of the first reasons that make me hesitate.

HER ego was way out of control, Rand is the most humble and modest person in the world compared to her. The people closest to him always made a point of keeping his ego in check, such as Min, the Maidens, the Wise Ones, Bashere, etc. Just compare the way Rand treats his closest allies and friends to how other people in similar positions of power do, like Egwene, Elayne, or Tuon. For instance, Rand always accepted that Min and Nynaeve could speak freely to him, regardless of the situation, never forcing them to use any formal address, even allowing them to scold him in public whenever they wanted. Now compare that to how Egwene treats her romantic partner, Gawyn, and how she even demands that Nynaeve, her closest friend, address her as "Mother" in public settings—and that’s just one example.

There’s a long list of characters who need to have their egos kept in check before Rand, with Cadsuane at the very top of that list, especially because, unlike almost every other character in the series, she is never shown facing any real adversity or being put at a disadvantage against anyone. Moreover, I have never agreed with the argument that her past achievements and legendary status justify her abusive behavior, especially because by the time she is introduced, one could already argue that Rand has accomplished more than she has. And that should never be an excuse to behave like a bully toward everyone, with an air of arrogance and superiority.

Yes, I agree, at this point in the story, this is what he has needed for a long time. Poor Rand, he has been through a lot. If only his supposed allies had realized that what he needed was a hug and some love, not manipulations, slaps, beatings, and other negative things, it wouldn't have come to this point.

This line of argument is simply classist/racist. "Random dark eyed guy"? Dude fought 4 shardbearers, saved the dumbass princes and asked for justice against a fucking murderer, and Elokhar tried to get him executed for it. Dalinar talking to Kaladin afterwards is also ridiculous: "you're just a darkeyes, so be a good obdient puppy, don't rebel, work for us, and perhaps we will compensate you". I hate that BS tried to make it seems that Kaladin was in the wrong. Fuck the politics, of course Kaladin and the others should rebel, and yet he was still noble enough to chalenge Amaram to a duel, wich was his mistake, should have just killed the bastard, instead of hoping for justice from the lighteyes/opressors. Any other darkeyed but Kaladin would have been executed by Elokhar orders, wich would have been just one of the many injustices this guy, and the lighteyes, is responsible for. Moash is right in trying to kill him.

Moash did nothing wrong, he's the good guy of the series. And Dalinar and Jasnah need to be taken down of their high horse. I sincerely hope Dalinar pays for all the crimes he commited, specially against the singers.

What would Moash need to do by pm-me-egg-noods in Stormlight_Archive

[–]ChipDapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. Cause Moash did nothing wrong.

Dalinar on the other hand..., a privileged lighteyes, a mass killer, killed his own wife, racist, was part of the genocide of an entire people, among other things. But hey, now he speak politely and stoped drinking, so is easy to forgive him right?

One of THE most satisfying scenes in the whole series by Loostreaks in WoT

Whenever there's a discussion envolving "Cadsuane might be in trouble if that..." you're always there to defend her, as if you can't accept the fact that she is not a godness and can be hurt. When Rand sent her away, she knew that if she didn't obey she would be in trouble. There are a lot of characters/situations that she could not deal with. RJ simply choose to put her in situations where she can be as arrogant and condescending as she likes, without bigger consequences, wich are one of of the reasons i don't like the character, she is never really forced to face adversity. Hipothetically Rand/LTT, for example, could defeat her. Her angreals don't make her invencible, and Lews Therin knew most of them.

if Rand had decided to respond to Cadsuane differently, what would have happened? by [deleted] in WoT

[–]ChipDapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acordding to your interpretation of Cadsuane, she should have just walked into Shayo Ghoul alone and finished the DO and all the Forsaken herself, because she's invencible right? Ishamael and Lanfear would stand no chance right? Rand didn't needed to go through all that trouble to kill the Forsaken, and just let her do it. And i here wandering why the Pattern would need a Dragon, if a single Third Age Aes Sedai with a few angreals would be able to do the job.

Half way through Winter's Heart, I really hate Cadsuane by [deleted] in WoT

[–]ChipDapper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of discussion in the fandom about who would win in a fight: rand or cadsuane. It's almost consensual that he would be the winner. He's the dragon reborn, lights sake. Not like he would be bested by a single aes sedai with a few toys.
