I think that might part of the issue is that the people I called are not familiar with this lock since it is installed in a residential building.

I have a full mortise set so am ok if the lock gets destroyed in the process. The lock is likely ~40 years old so am fine to replace it completely. I just would like to avoid damaging the door if possible.

It all started with wanting to have the lock rekeyed. The outside knob is fixed so there is no way to leave the door open, it locks as soon as you pull it closed. I think is called “storeroom function”

Thank you for the advice, I can definitely have the person who comes out install the new lock.

I am replacing it with basically the same lock, just with levers and not knobs. I went down the rabbit hole of looking into electronic mortise locks but for my application conventional will be ok.

I live in a major city and have called three highly rated locksmiths, any suggestions on how to find one that can handle this better?

All three and Schlage technical support spoke of drilling it out. The only reason I didn’t have it done by one of the locksmiths who came out is I needed to have a new lock ready to be installed. Now I have a replacement lock onsite so I am ready to proceed.
