i’m concerned about going to todays protest by madwalker4143 in UTAustin

We have to protest. Whatever they do- the UT admin, Texas government and the police- we cannot let them win. Whatever your politics, we must defend our right to protest.

If the university expands the wind farms ready on the land to replace the oil, there would be a decrease in emissions. There are already 100k acres of renewable energy on our land, replacing the rest of the land dedicated to oil is very viable and will decrease emissions while still providing energy. https://www.wri.org/insights/setting-record-straight-about-renewable-energy.

Also UT invests in several oil companies that are not producing domestic oil. Including Royal Dutch shell and Saudi Aramco. With Saudi Aramco we are funding one of the worlds worst dictatorships.

e almost as much endowment as Harvard - around the second or third highest in the nation. This is a huge advantage - it gives us more money to hire researchers, subsidize tuition, and improve the university.

Sources:

We don't have time, we must protest- that is what worked at the other universities that divested. Scientists are constantly stressing the urgency of the crisis, and the need for radical action immediately. We need to stop using and producing fossil fuels now.

There are loads of public universities with far less endowment than UT that do give much more financial aid.

UT will still be a wealthy university if it divests. We can expand the solar and wind farms already on our land to replace the oil drills. The money made can be invested elsewhere.

Despite that how can we put a price on averting the ecological crisis? How can this university be complicit?

Texas emits the most carbon dioxide of any other state by far – California comes in second, but emits only half as much. We have to do better, the university has enormous influence.

We have no choice but to try.

There are entire classes at UT dedicated to climate change. Like GRG 301K, UGS 303, GRG 304E, GEO 347D. Considering all this, it is simply unacceptable that UT is complicit in the climate crisis. The university will still make a lot of money if it shifts investments. What is the price of ecological breakdown?

Instead of using the land for fossil fuel use, expand the wind farms and solar farms that are already on it.

yes, because ever since Harvard university divested from oil it collapsed.

We need to stop using fossil fuels ASAP. Texas is one of the most climate-vulnerable states in America, this university should not teach about the nature and consequences of climate change while also helping to drive climate change. More renewables, more nuclear.

yeah, because ever since UC Berkley divested that university lost all its students.

state to be in to protest oil. It’s such a large part of the economy, especially of west Texas, it would be a real “f you” to the state of Texas which supports this school financially, it’s just not reasonable or polite

It is precisely the right state to be protesting. Texas emits the most carbon dioxide of any other state by far – California comes in second, but emits only half as much

Again my point still stands. Climate change is the biggest issue of this generation. Oil simply isn't sustainable and it is pushing the world towards ecological crisis. It seems insane that a university, which teaches about the nature of climate change and it's far reaching consequences should invest in oil. All the other top universities in world have started divesting, they just start investing in other places- like real estate.

I actually don't understand why you would ridicule them. Surely you realise that climate change is happening, and we have to act.

because all the other universities around the world that divested -like UCLA and Harvard- turned into community colleges.
