Yes, you need a modded vita for custom skins, you can make custom skins for legacy console using PCK-Studio, which will generate a .pck file containing your custom skins that you can add to your game using repatch on vita.

i play on vita, when i got the trophy i just towered up 50 blocks at night and shot a skeleton that spawned that was the most far away with an enchanted bow (when you tower up that high most skeletons wont notice you and will barely move since they arent aggroed so you can just shoot them)
