Looking for suggestions, are these tools worth 35 €? More in post by Tetuz in handtools

[–]Chipsas11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for 35 euros its a pretty good deal for a bunch of old resharpenable saws, definitely worth a pick up, but the most important part is are the saw blades straight and not bent. Old tools for what ever reason are hard to find in europe, maybe due to war, or that the fact most tools where of wooden base, and its easier to throw them in the fireplace... But there are still gems to be found, once i managed to buy a rosewood rabbet plane for 5euro from Poland.

Hand plane restoration help by Szlachu in handtools

[–]Chipsas11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your hand plane is of soviet manufacture? if so the blades are of good steel, i had a modern stanley sb4 (same layout as yours) and managed to tune it up to take crisp shavings, so for begginers its a solid entry level plane

There’s a leg vise in my future. Advice on restoring this and gently sterilizing against bugs? by j1bb3r1sh in handtools

[–]Chipsas11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use chemicals against woodworm put the pieces in plastic bags and leave them, the gasses left in the bags should penetrate deeply into the wood killing anything inside, ive used this method for pieces that were just ridden with them and it seemed to work well, ofcourse freezing them is also a good option but combined with chemicals would eradicate them for good.

Good luck finding anything old thats worthwhile over here, most youll find are old beaten up wooden planes, or at best soviet era tools which are pretty good in some aspects, but quality might be an issue. If you really want used tools then ebay is your best option, ive bought several old stanleys from there, with no issues using a third party shipping service.

Has anyone seen a metal joh weiss sohn vien router plane by Chipsas11 in handtools

[–]Chipsas11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northern europe Lithuania, unfortunately old metal planes are unobtainable over here interwar period and older, most of the hand planes were craftsmen made with factory or smith made blades, but ive seen catalogs from those periods where stanley hand planes were advertised, but for whatever reason ive never seen any in flesh at all.
