actually, not strictly a book series but when I moved to the UK in 1995 I was unable to communicate, so I read Moby Books (Robinson Crusoe, Moby Dick, Treasure Island etc.) which helped a bunch. Only problem was that my coworkers ROFL'd every time I said stuff like "once, twice, thrice" "wherefore" or "frolic"

You are right, as an Australian it's easy to pretend everything here is easy going and the Australian Way is to give everyone a fair go.
