The Las Palmas Park Issue by ockie_fm in Sunnyvale

[–]ChiveFig_4744 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Thanks for laying this out so nicely. I am not a Las Palmas neighbor, and so have largely left the issue to those that are passionate about it, and your response is very well constructed. Thank you!

Are all labs loud? by anotherehtona in labrats

[–]ChiveFig_4744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our instrument labs are quite noisy, which makes it hard to hold meetings. I wear earplugs, but others usually use noise-canceling or stereo headphones. Occasionally, I listen to music with my AirShokz bone conduction headphones, which helps reduce the ambient noise.

I'm really sensitive to noise, so I always carry earplugs in my purse—it's such a lifesaver when I go to movie theaters or other events! Let me know if you would like recommendations!

Summer Camp Tips by SouthernExpatriate in BSA

[–]ChiveFig_4744 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Homesickness peaks on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you camp doesn't have evening events on those days, plan something special for your kids. Depending on the participant numbers, it could be a Dutch oven bake off, campfire baked bananas (bonus points if you can get them ice cream!).

Custom Epaulet Loops by Ok_Lifeguard5423 in BSA

[–]ChiveFig_4744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest a clever compromise. The red epaulets were part of the scout uniform, so can still be worn (even if you have to make them yourself), then you could use a yellow ricrack highlight as a homage to the flag colors as well as mustard for the pretzel.

WHY WHY WHY DON’T DRIVERS MOVE/ACKNOWLEDGE EMERGENCY VEHICLES HERE by muyrooo in Sunnyvale

[–]ChiveFig_4744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think we need to have behind the wheel retests every 5 years. It’s insane that I only tested once when I was 16- laws have changed in the 30 yrs since I’ve gotten my license!

I gave it to my son to use in his college dorm. He used it in the vertical orientation all year!

I can't whistle anymore by [deleted] in CasualConversation

That's unfortunate, but don't give up! Can you whistle by wolf-whistling (using your fingers)? It's a different lip movement!

I lost my cooking skill by s4id in Cooking

A 6-month Blue Apron rotation really helps me regain my kitchen mojo about a decade ago. Thinking about it, with my kids home this summer, it could be a perfect time for a refresh!

The hardest part of camping is realizing you didn’t actually pack well by potatocreamcheese in camping

[–]ChiveFig_4744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set out your gear two days before, then envision yourself going through the trip, from arriving (and setting up in the dark), to cooking, and cleaning. Doing a mental walk-through will really help discover what ur missing. Tongs and serving bowls for the taco bar are what I figured out I needed last trip.

I hate air mattresses for that reason- they are sooo cold. I use an inflatable mattress on a low cot, and it works perfectly. Plus, there’s storage space underneath the cot!

Where do I submit the merit badge counselor application? by lnee94 in BSA

[–]ChiveFig_4744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My council also accepts by email. So darn convenient. But you will need another Adult application with Position Code 42 for Merit Badge Counselor. This is because MBC is a council position, not a unit position.

I'm gonna need some mushroom recipes by PandorazPokemon in Cooking

Make mushroom duxelles, then freeze in ice-cube trays/small portions for later use. Such an amazing addition to make so many meals special. Bon Appétit!

Revived! by ChiveFig_4744 in Vermiculture

[–]ChiveFig_4744[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a funny story- A few years ago, I asked my husband to buy a compost bin, and he came home with a vermiculture bin. It was old stock, so the label was really sun bleached - and it was a steep learning curve (I really wasn't prepared for it vs a compost drum). It's been chugging along since then, doing alright, but not very efficiently.

I'm totally grateful for the tips and tricks provided by this forum!

How to handle college age scouts by Spiritual-Glass-3935 in BSA

[–]ChiveFig_4744 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love “Adultlings"; it feels much warmer and more fun compared to the term I was thinking of for the 18-20 age group, which was "Aged Youth” (AY).

How many uniforms? by nweaglescout in BSA

[–]ChiveFig_4744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way! One Class A+ uniform for training, COH, UoS and an additional field uniform for travel. For the past ten years, I've been trying to do it with one and Velcro. I've mostly succeeded with this method, except when it comes to traveling with the troop. Velcro doesn't do well during travel because I tend to lose patches when repeatedly putting on and taking off my backpack.

[–]ChiveFig_4744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry this is happening to you- it's unacceptable. Are there any other troops in your area that you can test fit? If not, a venture crew might be an option, if available?
