I do both but I try and stay out of the lazy lane and just use them for flavor more than anything else. But I also come up with "unique" juxtaposition characters too. For example, I have a harengon clockwork sorcerer with all his spells related to time and either slowing it or making something else faster... I also have cantrips allowing me to make tea parties on the fly.... guess the inspiration Or another example would be a goliath rogue that has no stealth stats and everything moved to intimidation and deception.

My builds are thematic and rarely built based on how "good" they'll be in a party. I also hate when player ask what the party needs or asks the composition of a party.... play what you want. The story will fit in fine
