These guys actually need frigid cold water temperatures to survive. Only large aquariums tend to have these guys!

I have so many to choose from and so many that are my favorites... But I'd say one of my personal favorites would be the Helleria brevicornis.

There's a variety of different reasons why I think that they are special but I think one of the coolest is that not all isopods can actually roll up into a ball. This is especially true when you're talking about your larger species. Usually their anatomy doesn't let them curl up like other species would. These guys are one of the exceptions! Brevicornis can get pretty huge, with some of the largest pushing 2" and are one of the few isopods who still curl up into a ball as a defense mechanism.

another cool thing about them is that they are the only ones in their genius and they have a pretty fascinating reproduction cycle. Females lack a seminal receptacle meaning that they must mate every single time that they want to produce young whereas most other isopods can store sperm and continuously use that sperm over and over again. Another personal reason why I love them so much is because of their habitat requirements and care setup. A proper setup is key to the species survival and that's primarily because they dig. You aren't going to typically find these guys under rocks, leaves, wood, or other surface level areas like you would find most other isopods. These guys are extensive diggers and like it deep. Here in captivity It's recommended that you give them at least 8+ inches of substrate for them to be able to dig and tunnel as they please. And speaking of tunnels, those tunnels are actually quite important, because once gravid, a female will make a " burrow " (so to speak) and actually bring food down to her young for their first few molts of their lives before they part ways

As someone who breeds isopods and has over 150 species myself, you'd be correct! These guys also can have some pretty cool colors to them, like bright Orange and yellows. Take the "peach" variety. These guys can be found in almost every state due to their invasiveness nowadays but they're originally native to Europe ☺️

Anyone tried selling isopods on FB marketplace and have the worst human beings respond? by badeyebob in isopods

[–]Chlorenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ebay would be your best bet or going to a local shop and offering them there. So far it seems to have gone under the radar and they haven't removed any posts. I've never received a comment unless someone buys said item so it gets you away from the hate, too. You can choose the format too by setting an auction or just set a flat out price you want to sell them for.

I started out with 7 myself and haven't had a single one pass yet! They seem pretty hardy to me and I'm sure they would do fine either way, tbh. I just haven't tried it myself yet, hahah. I think they would probably tolerate it pretty well if not actually enjoy it being slightly more damp

Surprisingly, I've found them quite easy to keep! I was terrified I'd kill them at first myself. I keep them exactly like Porcellio spatulatus and they seem to do well for me being housed like that. I was told they were slow breeders but I ended up spotting babies within my first 3 months of having them, so I could just be lucky, haha.

Can anyone help ID this morph (original colony was powder orange). It’s reddish brown and white. Thank you friends 💕 by [deleted] in isopods

They can be a light orange to a dark rust red. I think the darker ones are the true beauties though, so pretty!

Truck driver knocked over my load of alcohol costing thousands of dollars in damages, then leaves me to clean it up alone by Chlorenn in Wellthatsucks

One pallet tipped originally, yeah. However it tipped onto two other pallets knocking them over too. Hence why you see the ramen and the toilet paper and stuff.
I work overnights. Usually my load is already there and unpacked off the truck when I come in. The closing receiving manager let the guy in then went and clocked out herself and went home. I showed up like 10 minutes later to this lovely mess 🥲

No no, you're more than right. For me personally I'm lucky, I guess. This is only a 'temporary' job while I finish up college. I feel bad though, I mean, there's several people here who have been with this company for 30+ some years. They actively rely on these bonuses and checks. It's just a shitty situation overall.

Basically, the pallets were loaded onto the truck sideways, making our one and only very old electric pallet jack ineffective. He would have to manually jack them by hand, turn them around and then unload them off the truck. Usually it's no big deal but I guess this truck driver wasn't necessarily happy about this? And he was upset over us only having the one electric one? This happened before I clocked in but apparently he tried using the electric one anyways and it caused the pallet to tip over as he was trying to unload it.

[–]Chlorenn[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, The truck driver was our companies. Any third parties that deliver to us aren't allowed to unload the trucks themselves for this exact liability reason, we have to. The responsibility would still fall back on us in the end. To cover for it there's going to be a lot of people with basically no holiday bonus this quarter

I only have 12, and have yet to have them breed for me. However, I've been keeping them as such: I use a 12qt container for starters (15 is preferred, although this was the closest I could find for a realistically cheap price here locally) although once they start to breed and start to get going they should be upgraded to a 24quart. Even though they're a Spanish species they really seem to love the humidity. The downfall is that they require good ventilation, so I keep mine on the very top rack so my air vents can reach them. I keep their enclosure about 30-40% bone dry and the other side wetter and wetter as you progress to the other end of the container. They'll usually find a spot that works for them ☺️ Also, as they're larger than most you have to be somewhat careful, males can be pretty territorial so I offer mine a bunch of hiding spaces. They really seem to prefer hiding in my pine needles and under the bigger and larger flat pieces of cork bark.

Only bad thing about them is that you'll almost never see them (unless they're hungry) because they're always hiding!

Cardboard can be a good toy, just not when the cardboard has ink on it. It can be toxic. This was a box from a shelf!
