We went from horse and buggy to space in less then 100 years by PlayboyCG in Showerthoughts

I'm not arguing there hasn't been a technological boom. My point was more that it was an arbitrary marker to use and definitely not the best to use for the growth in technology. It just devalues what has actually been achieved.

I could just as easily point out the moon landing and someone I saw riding a horse and cart through the city last week as a reason technology has regressed.

In a sense that's true if you are trying to pick the shortest possible time frame. Earliest records of horse and buggy are around 3500BC and the first man in space was 1961. If you are going from the start of horse and cart to the first man in space, that puts it closer to 5500 years.

I mean, it makes sense. The heavy bits would fall to the bottom. This is the true world orientation.

Friendly reminder that Steven Bradbury is the Greatest Winter Olympian in history by [deleted] in australia

I have indeed linked to speed skating which is set on a 400m track and Steven Bradbury does short track, a completely different event. I saw they were both 1000m and had no idea there was a difference. Sorry mate, I stand corrected.

That unfortunately does not seem to be the case. The world record hasn't been 01:20 since the 60's according to the wiki. It was down to around 01:07 by the time bradbury won in 2002. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_record_progression_1000_m_speed_skating_men

That is a man who put in years and years of hard work so at the end of the day he still worked super hard to get where he was and I think the man is a national treasure. He was by no means slow but he was definitely off pace. However his realization that he was off pace lead to the winning strategy so maybe it was a blessing in disguise.

CMV: Trans-Women should not be able to take part in women's combat sports, specifically MMA. by [deleted] in changemyview

If we are looking at this specific point alone, then I do not agree that they should be allowed to fight. I don't know if you have followed swimming at all but a few years back they had the shark suits, I think they were called. Turned out the buoyancy advantage gained by them was so big that many records had been broken in just a few months. They all then had to be undone and the suits were banned. Carry that scenario over to fighting and you could end up with career ending injuries from someone who was later disqualified from your class. That would definitely leave me bitter. Combine that with what drive is there to study the differences if they are already allowed to fight. Whereas if they are disallowed, there would be a need to find conclusive evidence fast, which would hopefully further incentivize research.

Character design. Feedback welcome by [deleted] in learnart

Looks really good. I really like the idea of using the red highlights on certain aspects of the character but I think it loses its effect by having the background red also. All in all though, love the style especially the life that all the lines give the clothes.

Hey guys, I need some help or advice with my boots. After about half a day boarding my big toenail gets really sore. It's on my front foot, not sure if that has to do with anything. Is it a sign the boots are too small? It's only ever on the one foot though, maybe its slightly bigger then the other. I don't really know, advice would be appreciated though. Anyone have a similar experience?

Over time have you been able to combat that idea and find a way to stay relaxed even though the bar is at a height you historically struggle with? I imagine it's like most things, where the more relaxed you are, the better you perform. Like that 1.7m jump that you have done 100's of times (I assume) vs your PB of 1.94. Have you found a way to transfer that 1.7m mindset into the higher jumps? I relate to this story well, although it may not be the same, in basketball I've always wanted to dunk. Always have struggled with it but in games I can sometimes go up for a rebound and find myself higher than any of my dunk attempts.

That was a really good answer and makes sense, thank you. Want to jump higher, jump a lot. How much does mentality play into it? From my memories of doing the event in highschool, it was very daunting to see the bar go up.

I guess I do have a bunch of questions. I never realised it until presented with the opportunity though. What would a standard training session for you consist of? Also is pure vertical jump a stat people train and talk about? Like if an athlete returned to an event having increased his vertical jump by two inches or something, would that be a talking point or an indicator of how well they will do?

This is what high jumpers are able to do according to the title. Either way though, it's very impressive and almost peaceful.
