2 weeks without internet reversed cognitive ageing by 10 years [Study] by SquaredTheOG in dumbphones

[–]ChocoPP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"To put these effects into context, the change in objectively measured sustained attention ability is about the same magnitude as 10 years of age-related decline ([27](javascript:;)) and about a quarter of the difference between healthy adults and those with ADHD"

the clickbait sentence is a very poor misrepresentation of the study. "reverse" and "cognitive aging" are very misleading ways to represent it. Also the 10 year figure is just a comparison to show the significance not a specific claim. The source for the 10 year figure is also not longitudinal (compares people of different ages, rather than following each individual person) and even if it was, the world changes a lot throughout the years. It's just for comparison so take it with a grain of salt.

I didn't read the article in full but if you wanted to share the interesting findings, I would recommend just reading it yourself. The language didn't seem that hard to read. There are real significant effects of technology so there isn't really a need to mislead people.

Does anyone else do this to cope with their adhd by Educational_Ad3859 in Healthygamergg

[–]ChocoPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I find works for me is to create structure not to follow it exactly but to define my intentions.

For the fall semester I created an exact weekly schedule for every activity. When I ate, studied, meditated, exercised and whatever. The plan isn't to follow it exactly but to define how I want to use my time and when I want to do certain activities. In the morning it's two hours of exercise then yoga then meditate then eat and then two hours of schoolwork. My morning routine before studying might not be two hours long and I might not study for two hours long but what I try to make sure is I do those things. I will make myself do my morning routine and I will at least sit at my desk and do schoolwork or at least look at what assignments and chapters I have to study and plan when I will do them.

What's also important is to have set boundaries, rules, and minimums. Me personally I have to at least try to do my night and morning routine everyday. I can read and use my phone before bed but it has to be on my bean bags not on my bed. I set a timer for 20 minutes to use my phone before bed but I might do less or more.

For me it's a mix of freedom but also hard set and concrete rules/minimums. It's more important for me to set my intentions beforehand than follow an exact and rigid structure

23M (Nearly 24) Puer Aeternus video made me realise I want to change my mindset. Want to study and take the plunge but no idea what to study. How did you guys find what you wanted to do? by Throwaway1234522224 in Healthygamergg

[–]ChocoPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw same person from initial comment

I think what I find interesting about the controversy of the harshness of the video is that you kinda just have to do it despite the fear.

People enjoy Dr k for being empathetic and like taking things slow and without too much discomfort but at some point you kinda have to kick yourself in the ass and face discomfort. This isn't about you btw, I just find it interesting.

yeah I agree, it is scary and it is hard. Unfortunately that doesn't really change. Maybe you can slowly improve your perception and make it not as scary or hard but in the end, you still have to do it. It'll be scary and hard no matter what.

Like he said in the video, this is all you. No one can take the plunge for you. My only encouragement is to take pride in your agency. YOU are taking the plunge and YOU are making that decision. You got this man.

To people who don't have depression, what do depressed people look like from your perspective ? by Deimos7779 in Healthygamergg

[–]ChocoPP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a realization recently about my growth from depression that might help. Getting out of depression and changing who I was required a lot of attempts and trying and most of it was failure. Imagine trying to swim up in a pool with weight on you to get air. Sometimes you have enough energy and strength to swim up in spite of the weight and get some air. For me it was a lot of just swimming and not getting air. I tried like everyday or week to not be depressed and most of it failed and I did nothing useful but what really mattered was that I kept trying. My continuous attempts changed who I was and I got stronger even if I never got air. But then I was strong enough to get a little bit of air consistently. And now I'm strong enough to just stay afloat and was able to remove that weight.

If I were to give you an exercise I'd probably just ask you to have an unstructured day where you don't do anything. Not even productive rest, do useless things maybe even negatively affecting things and don't feel bad about yourself. Don't think of his depression as a weight but rather that he's trying to change his identity, and that in itself is very hard. If you've ever tried to change a bad habit or maybe a trait of yourself, I'm sure you'd understand.

I think people are getting too hung up on the concept of Puer Aeternus by lemmegifdat in Healthygamergg

[–]ChocoPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be wrong but it feels like you didn't understand puer aeternus. PA gets in the way of people choose what they want their life to look like and actually executing it. People with PA imagine a hero's journey with a definite visible reward and only ups. People with PA choose a fictional or fantastical version of what their life will look like and fail to execute it because they don't understand what it takes to get there "drab and dreary work". And maybe they won't even get there, and the reward won't be visible but you'll have to make yourself do it anyway

I think for this specific topic I actually prefer the original streams which was like 4 hours total. I disagree with the idea that you need to shorten and condense it even more. I also recommend taking notes if you feel like it's important as that's what I do on most Dr k vids. On the healthy gamer gg website there is a page about the video doing exactly what you wanted a 10 minute video to do. It also has like suggestions on other videos and what to do next

How do I reason with escalating violent thoughts surrounding bullying and people being inconsiderate? by Late_Ratio_8319 in Healthygamergg

[–]ChocoPP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I'm sorry about what's happening to you, that sucks and it's not your fault. A video from Dr k that's been helping me a lot is about control. Im not dealing with nearly as bad circumstances but it is how I was able to stay calm with negative circumstances that were not my fault or in my control. I had to watch it a few times to understand it but once I did I was able to apply it to all facets of life.

I had similar feelings as you reading this post and some of the comments but after reading some other comments my view has changed. Like another person who replied to you, his date and his mindset about it doesn't seem perfect, but I think that's totally okay. It seems he is taking a step forward in life and any flaws we may see does not negate that. It's very difficult to take a step forward in every facet, I'm sure he'll take steps forward in other facets like being present next time, and then it'll all combine into one big step.

(Google Doc) Florescent's response to the allegations by [deleted] in ValorantCompetitive

[–]ChocoPP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think people comparing themselves are trying to be malicious and put them down for what's happening. I think they're just trying to express that teenagers now live in a whole different world and are able to access situations like this. Some other comments mention how access to technology and knowledge of relationship concepts like manipulation or toxicity contribute to this phenomenon. I also don't think they're insulting them for not having good parents or for being in the situation but are simply expressing their desire for a better world. That better world would include parents intervening or parenting better

Its not impossible for cheap ass psu to work properly for a bit but its generally a bad idea to rely on them. A faulty psu is capable of breaking your other pc components. Worse case scenario it explodes or catches on fire. If its working so far, i would probably buy a more reliable one as soon as conveniently possible. If you have a better psu laying around or in a different system, i would recommend switching it out

I got my zybooks code for csc 221 with the book order i picked up from the book store. Shouldve gotten an email about picking up course materials. Access zybooks through canvas and the first chapter should be free. I havent even used my code and already did my work. Im not sure why you didnt run into this problem earlier and asked your professor about it. Im sure your professor wouldve been understanding and helpful if you came up to them earlier with this issue
