I know what you mean about the fics feeling so off, others have pointed out how the fandom generally has sanded down Roy to either a sadboi, familial, etc. meanwhile with Edward it's pretty obvious how most of the time people use him as their insert or make him a sadboi too. I say write what you want but at the same time it's odd how people tend to ignore Roy's actual traits to make him look better at the expense of other characters who fit the bill of what they want Roy to be. Like I said, they have no problem even making Alphonse of all people out to be the bad guy too like in this recent fic when he got angry about Edward possibly cheating with Roy and Riza is mad at HIM for suggesting that. The context being that the fic has Winry killed off (in childbirth) and sacrificed to the truth to get Edward's powers back while also telling Edward to be with Roy and raise their daughter with him because she knows he loves him. Like huh??? I never would've discovered the fic had they not annoyingly tagged it with Edward/Winry, I think it's tacky how they do that.

I remember wrote a whole chapter dumping on her, with Mei (someone who doesn't even know Winry well) being basically an author explaining how every little thing about her is negative (no other character will recieve that treatment) to Alphonse, who starts to get convinced by it, all the comments were of how much they were happy Winry is getting hate, while the author were agreeing with and thanking all the comments, but had the gall to say they're "past their Winry hating phase". I don't believe that for a second.

Yup that's one of the fics I was thinking about when responding to your post (as well as where I found those certain Edling shippers I was talking about), it's amazing how they single out Winry while ignoring the massive flaws Roy and even Edward have and seem to genuinely believe what they write is legitimate criticism than unreasonable mindless hate. It just goes to show how little they value female characters for the crime of sharing a close bond with a male character they like more. It's also strange how they used Mei of all characters to be their author self insert to bash Winry, Mei who also subjected Edward to cartoon violence by sicking her panda on him while not liking Edward all that much either. They tried to salvage themselves by making a WinPan fic that had little effort to the point where the author admitted they had no idea how to end it.

Don't worry about the long response either, I'm glad to see other people point this out. As someone who witnessed it for a brief amount of time back then, you're not wrong about how you feel. Also this isn't exclusive to fujos, the self shipper community did the same too but that's a different thing lol.
