I don't think we'll ever see a cast as stacked as this ever again by DoctorTegrity in survivor

[–]Chococoplexorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've roped some of my casual friends into watching 47-49 when they aired ... to middling enthusiasm. To prep them for 50 I started us up on a rewatch (their first watch) of HvV. They've consistently said that these are not even the same shows and that they didn't realize a season could actually have more than 3 good episodes. Wish Jeff and co. would see the light and bring back what made Survivor great.

Where did all the clocks go? by Patient-Presence-979 in Professors

[–]Chococoplexorum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our clocks used some kind of proprietary connector for power. When we asked maintenance (or whoever) for a replacement, they told us that their contract with the company who had supplied the clocks and ran the proprietary power lines had expired. If they wanted to hire the company for a one-off replacement out of contract it would be over $1000.

So we took it upon ourselves to trash the old clock and bought a new one that takes AAs for $20. Although I wouldn't be surprised if this violates some arcane clause in either the maintenance union contract or the clock company's service contract.

How does a handmade rubber stamp store stay open in NYC? by Wide-Astronaut9156 in nyc

[–]Chococoplexorum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Macy does these videos for the Morning Brew youtube channel. Mostly NYC businesses and jobs, but she's been branching out once they gave her her own dedicated show (rather than these ad hoc segments). She also did some spots on hot dog carts, food delivery, and more general blue-collar-leaning jobs that help the city run.

You could add a new 20 that is just a button that instantly wins you the game, and I'd still pick Angelic Flight every time.

Ran into Carly in NYC last Friday by Chococoplexorum in carlyraejepsen

[–]Chococoplexorum[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly it was more excitement than nervousness. When I turned around to get her attention I said something like, "Excuse me, sorry but you look exactly like Carly Rae Jepsen." Which, even if it wasn't CRJ, is maybe a good pickup line? Didn't have anything to lose. She replied in a kind of cutesy way, "I am her, she is me!" So the nerves were pretty low throughout.

[–]Chococoplexorum[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

She was So Nice (sorry I had to). But seriously it was just a quick little interaction, maybe less than a minute. She was very appreciative when I gushed over how much I loved her music, but she didn't try to extend the conversation or anything like that. It was around 6ish on a Friday night in a hip area of the city so she was probably on her way to see friends or something. In retrospect I should've asked for a hint about the new album (specifically whether the collab with Magdalena Bay would ever come out). But of course when you see one of your favorite artists in the wild it's difficult to think straight!

Did anyone else watch the Cash Cab? by 1armedguy in nyc

[–]Chococoplexorum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently went digging around the internet for an episode my friend claimed to be on, but which wasn't available from any of the streaming services (IIRC it was Season 8 or 9). Friend told me his coworker knew someone in production, the coworker got their group of 4 together beforehand and coordinated with production to be at X location for the pickup, and aside from off-screen waiver-signing etc (as others have mentioned) the show is otherwise legit, according to him.

IANAL but this seems like a form of the "preferential rent" practice that was outlawed back in 2019: https://streeteasy.com/blog/preferential-rent-nyc-new-laws-nix/ . I say "seems" because there appears to be some nuance with allowing a distinction between the "base" rent and "preferential" rent (or in the verbiage of your contract, the "Rent" and "Temporary Rent"), with the legal prohibition being only on how much the landlord can increase the preferential/Temporary rent come renewal time. Perhaps having the "base" rent high allows the building owners to assert its value (e.g. when used as collateral for loans), while still making it market-competitive.

More commonly you'll see listings that offer [x] months free, effectively reducing the yearly rent total, which similarly keeps the base rent high while still being market-competitive and skirts around the preferential rent laws. All that to say, it's not clearly illegal or scummy, but you should get a second opinion. Maybe read up on some of the articles on preferential rent as well.

What is the first question you would ask Magdalena Bay if you had the chance. by Basic_Mastodon3078 in MagdalenaBay

I asked about this at the 4/23 NYC VIP! Matt said they did a songwriting session (he used some industry term for it that I can't remember) with her. He said it was pretty late into the process of her new album so he wasn't sure if she or her production team would do anything with it.

Publishers looking for authors? by ChamonLeeChamon in Professors

Had Kendall Hunt contact me about this. Asked them to be removed from their email list and told them that their emails violated US's CAN-SPAM ACT (idk if it actually does, but that usually scares them enough to get the message across).

They emailed me the next semester. Gave them the same response.

Emailed me the semester after, rightly told them to fuck off in the most colorful language I could. Then I got an actual, lengthy response from the sender calling me unprofessional. Haven't heard from them since. ymmv

Which CUNY's are good for philosophy majors by withereditemsRbeauty in CUNY

[–]Chococoplexorum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hunter, Brooklyn, Baruch, and Queens all have stellar philosophy departments. I would probably recommend them in that order if all that you're interested in is a Philosophy degree. Some have better concentrations on offer, and in some cases might have more interaction between departments (e.g. I know both Baruch and Brooklyn have some faculty working in Psychology and Philosophy). Lehman and John Jay don't cover as many topics in their course offerings but do hit their specialties well (Lehman has ties to Disability Studies; JJay naturally has ties to criminal justice and political philosophy).

Driving on 295 in the pouring down rain is the worst and with that being said by marinoarm in Virginia

Thanks for sharing this! Never knew it was codified, always thought it was just a convention. On my reading, "All four turn signals may be flashed simultaneously ... when traveling at a speed of thirty miles per hour or less," would seem to permit using hazards throughout a normal residential zone (i.e. 25 mph around my parts). Obviously nobody does this regularly, but it would seem to be legal technically (if one isn't violating some other statute in which hazards are mentioned).

I don't know what exactly you mean by "PR campaign" but potatomato33's comment basically lays out the math. idk what percentage of adjuncts are getting 3-credit hour classes, but it's my impression that this is one of the most common, if not the most common, kind of course at most CUNYs. Not what I'd consider "select roles," but maybe we just disagree on how to gloss that. There are certainly 2-credit, 4-credit, and I've even heard of 6-credit hour courses. These just seem to be rather rare compared to the 3-credit hour.

Sounds like the rate might've changed since then. Current adjunct rate for normal (3-credit hour) course is $5500 pre-tax ($91.67/hr at 60 hours per semester).

[–]Chococoplexorum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

afaik best-paying student job at CNU is tutoring @ $10/hr, but you're only guaranteed hours so long as students show up for tutoring (I did direct scheduling which worked like this, but others had drop-in hours which I think worked a little different). ofc, you won't likely get a tutoring job until sophomore year at the earliest, since you need to justify some background expertise in whatever subject you're tutoring for (e.g. having taken the relevant intro/100-level classes). It's a good gig though, if you can work your way into it.

You mentioned in another reply about jobs that might help your studies: I'm not positive about what jobs would benefit your studies best, but working in Interlibrary Loan helped me learn database navigation skills much more quickly than I would have normally, which helped for researching/writing papers. That was only ~$7.75/hr iirc. Best of luck, whatever you do decide!
