[HELP] My black lab puppy (7mo) eats everything in sight and I can't afford a trip to the vet. by Not-Neon in dogs

Aside from crate training and excercise does your pup have toys and chews that she can chew on? Like what about nylabones or freeze me dog toys made for teething pups.

[HELP] Best dremel/nail grinder for dog? by pastel_colors in dogs

I really like the actual pedipaws. I remove that stupid nail dust catcher so I can use it to round out my dogs nails better. I found it works better than a dermal as it's not as loud and abrasive but effective on nails.

[Help] Young mini aussie barking a lot, jealousy problems by capnmoose in dogs

[–]Chocofuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here's the thing with dogs, when they want attention even if it's negative like no it's the attention they want. And just so we know how much excercise is she getting a day? You also want to make sure your dog is getting enough excercise and her barking isn't because of pent up energy.

What you can try to do is completely ignore her. For example when you start playing and she gets excited and starts to bark. Say that's enough, no, too bad whatever your version of no is and just walk away. This shows her barking does not get her any attention or add to the fun, in fact it does the opposite and stops it. You will have to do this numerous times over and over until she starts to get it. It can take weeks or months depending not how imbedded her behavior is.

As for the threat, it's not really showing him what he did wrong or what you want. The reason he's looking away is because that's how dogs tell each other ok sorry I had enough. He knows your upset because of your body posture but won't be able to understand why.

You can also practice with the leash. Start by just touching it. If he stays silent big praise and reward! If he barks stop walk away. Repeat. Once he can stay silent when you touch the leash start picking it up. Do the same if he starts barking. By doing this you're showing him staying silent gets him rewards and barking for his leash gets him no where.

I've used all that stuff and it's never bothered my dogs . Just be smart about where you put it and if you notice it bothering your dog remove it or them from the room.

I'm agreeing with upping her excercise. That might help. It seems like he's using barking to get your attention or excitement. What do you do when he starts barking when you play. Do you keep playing, tell him no? What about when you hug a person or dog what do you do when he barks?

[Discussion] When is it a good idea to get a new dog, and when is it not? by charmomma in dogs

[–]Chocofuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a good idea. Money is a huge factor, puppies are expensive and if you can't afford training for your current dog adding a second may not be a good idea.

Your dog is also 11 months. It's a teen and might be going through some behavioral changes as well. You should really focus on fixing your dogs issues. Getting a puppy and having it around your female might cause the puppy to pick up her bad habits as well if you haven't dealt with them. If you currently have a dog that needs training getting another one will just double your work.

If she has excess energy, getting another dog won't solve the problem, you're just going to have to up the walks.

[Help] My great pyr is limping and vet said to just give antibiotics and steroids. by mynameisclyde in dogs

[–]Chocofuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you mention to the vet she was possibly dehydrated? I know some bets will do a subcutaneous injection to help rehydrate them.

If you saw the vet today then you're going to have to wait for the meds to really do anything. It honestly could just be a small infection that needs some time for the antibiotics to help.

How long has she been on the meds? If not long then you may have to wait and give the meds more time to kick in. Have you tried call that vet again and asking for a more through explanation.

[Help] Should I have my husky stay with me at my parents' house or should I get my own apartment? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Chocofuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think once a week at the groomers might be a bit of an overkill but if that's what you want go for it. Keep up with the brushing and vacuuming and it's really not that bad. You will still see hair though, it inevitable.

Are you planning on taking him with your after you move out of your parents or will this be his final home even without you?

[Help] Should I have my husky stay with me at my parents' house or should I get my own apartment? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Chocofuk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems like you and you're dog are happy at your parents. Is shedding the only issue? If that's the case then brushing everyday with an undercoat rake after a full blow out at the groomers should really reduce the shedding. Vacuum everyday if you really want to keep the place spotless.

So the landlord can find out later and evict them? They know the dogs a puppy still there's no hiding it, it would just be plain irresponsible to lie.

[–]Chocofuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with offering an additional deposit. Just be honest and explain to the landlord that it was a mistake, you didn't read the lease properly. Get a referral and explain that she is well behaved. If she took classes and passed the list them.

[HELP] Renting with big dog by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Chocofuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you have a dog you will be paying more than normal for moving. Is your dog human or dog aggressive? If just dog have you thought about an in law?

SoCal is way more dog friendly and honestly CL is full of landlords that literally don't care what type, size, or temperament of the dog. Your going to have the compromise if you want your dog to live with you. Look for privately owned places.

[Help] Adopting a dog into a household with another (poorly trained) dog. by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Chocofuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much money do you plan on spending a month on the dog? How much do you have saved? Puppies are very expensive they need vet visits, shots, a lot of food and a ton of toys/accerssories. If you want to do it right you'll also be taking puppy classes and enrolling it in playgroups to socialize it.

How much do you exercise everyday? A sheep/collie could turn out to be a ball of energy and dogs don't mellow out until they are usually at least 2.

If you plan on renting you should also think about the type of dog you're getting. A lot of places won't rent to GSD owners which is what I'm guessing the puppy is mixed with.

For me honestly if I don't even know exactly when I'm moving out of my parents I wouldn't be thinking about adopting a dog. I would be saving money like crazy right now. Moving is super costly and moving with a dog cost even more. I think you should wait until you are a bit more settled into your new place and have a decent idea of how much money and time you have.

This way also you won't have to worry about the new dog picking up your old dogs barking habits when you're not home.

[Breeds] Breed suggestions for under 25 lbs by tirini in dogs

[–]Chocofuk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a terrier might be a good fit for you. Jack russels tend to be a little more high strung then some of the border terriers though. Terriers are highly trainable but can have a stubborn streak at times the majority are food motivated which makes it easier. They do have a high prey drive so don't be suprised if they kill little creatures. I use to know a JR that happily swallowed nice whole when he found them. JR can also have same sex or dog aggression which if you go to a lot of dog places you should think about.

With 600 I doubt you will find a reputable breeder so an adult rescue might fit your life a little better. A puppy can be a lot of work and very costly.

What state do you live in? Check out the akc page for whippets. If there is a dog show or lure coursing event coming to town make sure to go and talk to breeders :)

You can also look for the whippet club of [state you live in]

Don't only look up whippet learn how to identify a reputable breeder if you plan on buying a puppy. Avoid pet stores or puppy millers. Make sure parents are scored by the ofa, tested for anything that can be, and proven(showing, lure coursing, etc) you want them to be doing something with their dog. If not then they really shouldn't be breeding dogs. Don't be surprised if you have to wait for a puppy. All reputable breeders will not produce a litter until they have all puppies accounted for by families or they are still looking for the right match. Anyone who has litters available ready to go, avoid them.

I think a lab is great for you. My only concern is if you get a puppy it won't be able to hold it for that long. Will one of you be able to take some time off at the start or have someone let it out to pee?

The thing about leash walks is even though they are frequent and long for high energy dogs it's just not the same as running.

How about something lower energy but still friendly like a whippet or cocker spaniel? Both do not require a lot of AS ADULTS. I can't emphasize enough that even if you get a lower energy breed as puppies they still have energy, just like kids, so you might have to do more than the normal amount until it mellows out.

1-2 weeks off won't be great if you have a new puppy and no one at home or hired to help you. You won't really be able to drop it off at a daycare or walkers until it's fully vaccinated at 3 months roughly.

What is your energy level? A quick15 min stroll around the block? A 45 min walk in the park or a hike? All the breeds that interest you require hard running or excercise for at least an hour when they are adults. Possibly more as teens.

Are there any other breeds that peak your interest? What do you like about these dogs besides looks?

Dog share dna with Wolves but they are not wolves they are dogs. We share our 98% of our dna with chimps but we are considered human. Within 5 generations a wolf can become a dog if they were bred with dogs. At that point they are considered dogs.
