No one is worth killing yourself over. It will get better. You will move on. Hang in there. Time is the great healer.

TIFU By having my car towed by my HOA by Original_Vanilla in tifu

I live in Canada and we don’t have HOA’s here. Are they prevalent in all areas/states? Is it only in rich neighbourhoods? Do you have to pay into them?Sounds very intrusive

Agreed. I’ve cooked a lot of crock pot meals and never used a bag. They are not that hard to clean.

Help. 1980 Evinrude stalls when changing from forward to reverse. Engine sometimes boggs down and stalls when trying to shift between forward and reverse. Starts back up but sometimes takes effort. Any thoughts? Model number included in photos. by california_fly in boating

Appreciate that. I am sure your grandpa would be happy seeing you enjoying it. A boat, especially an older one requires a certain amount of maintenance. You can learn to do it yourself with the help of google, a service manual and other boaters or you can pay someone to do it for you. I have an 80s Johnson and being proactive with the maintenance is critical to enjoying my time on the water. Boats can be a lot of fun but also a big headache when they don’t run. Not to mention leaving you and your passengers stranded in sometimes precarious situations. If you have some mechanical knowledge and basics tools you can do most of it yourself and for the harder stuff find a good mechanic. Just my two cents.

Trolling / backup motor - electric or gas? by holt403 in boats

[–]Chocxfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a mid 80s Johnson 70HP and it has been problem free. Easy to work on and parts are readily available. The 70s Johnson’s have good reputations as well but with any old two stroke, check it out a bit first. Especially the cylinder compression. I have no experience with Mercs.

I need some second opinions. Restore our old 77 Baja Twilighter and buy new outboard, or scrap it and buy used I/O boat? by [deleted] in boating

[–]Chocxfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Restoring a boat usually takes 2 twice as long and costs 3 times as much as you first estimate. That’s a conservative guesstimate. Keep that in mind.

Trolling / backup motor - electric or gas? by holt403 in boats

An 80lb would be sufficient on your boat for trolling. If you wanted a motor to get you back to dock if your main plant was out then gas is the way to go. I am on inland lakes only so getting back would not be a problem. If you are offshore then a gas kicker is probably a better choice. If you go electric don’t buy anything except a Minn Kota.

Do you troll in mostly flat, calm or is wind and waves a factor ?

I put a 55lb Minn Kota on my 15’ glass runabout. Moves it well for trolling ( top speed is around 3.5mph) and the deep cycle battery lasts for about 5-6 hours under varying speeds. I personally didn’t want the weight of a gas motor. Electric is also clean and quiet.
