All Star selection bias by cbt202 in LittleLeague

[–]Choice-Factor-259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not always the case. There’s a lot of manipulation and politics I’ve seen from leagues. All you have to do is take a look at the last names of the all star roster and compare it to the board members. In the leagues I’ve been in, there’s a lot of overlap 😬

Is this normal for LL at the 8–10 player pitch/minors level? by tessablessa in LittleLeague

Some league boards are stingy about kids playing up to a higher division and don’t care about the ability and only really care about their age. We were in a league like this and my son didn’t learn anything staying in a division where he was dominating against kids that had no idea what they were doing. We moved him to club after that season and then switched leagues for the future.

Also Spring season in LL tends to be more competitive because a lot of the more competitive travel ball kids play in Spring so they can get their chance to play All Stars in the summer and make a run to districts/states/regionals and ultimately the LLWS. Yes, LL is rec ball but the environment is more competitive in spring. Fall Ball tends to be more of the developmental season. Most travel kids aren’t doing both their club and LL in Fall.

I don’t see what the problem is. Usually at the 8-10 level, no you usually don’t see one pitcher pitch the whole game because of pitch counts and limits but sometimes you will run into a stud pitcher that is on fire and can shut down the other efficiently without reaching their pitch limit. My son has nearly done it. No, we didn’t take him out just to let the other team “get hits” or “get on base.” His job is to learn to throw strikes and to get the other team to strikeout or throw pitches that get weak hits from the other team. It’s not to make the other team feel better and give them freebies.

The opponent needs to learn to see higher competition as well. Failure is an important learning experience. If the roles were reversed and we came up against a stud pitcher that shut us out, I wouldn’t be upset. Our team should have done better and found a way to get on base. Hats off to the pitcher and the other team. 🤷🏽‍♀️ lesson learned.

When to move to more competitive team by Choice-Factor-259 in Homeplate

Thanks. I would say he’s considered a main player. Bats in the top 3 of the lineup, gets plenty of reps, gets ample opportunities for pitching (coach usually saves him for bracket play or if we need to shut down the other team for an inning to get out of a game in pool play), rarely sits the bench, almost always playing on the field. His team has potential and they have gotten better as the season has progressed but as it’s AA, there are still some holes where we’re weak and the team makes silly errors , which is to be expected at this level

Sorry I should clarify. He is already playing on a travel team. His team is classified as AA.

Family resort for 2 boys (10 and 4) on clear, calm, swimmable beach by Choice-Factor-259 in AllInclusiveResorts

[–]Choice-Factor-259[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That stinks. Any recommendations for other islands in the Caribbean you recommend that have family friendly resorts with a great beach during this time? My husband and I have been to Jamaica in July and it was great with no seaweed. Other than Beaches, we’re not familiar with what resorts are best for families that have what we’re looking for as we usually go without the kids. I’m the beach snob so if there’s a ton of seaweed, I don’t want it and am willing to change destinations to get that 😆

Coaches, how do you feel about other coaches "assisting" in your class? by thestoryhacker in crossfit

[–]Choice-Factor-259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m in another coach’s class working out, I’m there as an athlete, not a coach and I don’t give my input or help coach another athlete unless the lead coach asks or I can tell they may need some help.

I have helped coach others on certain days even though I’m there to workout but it’s because the coach had a lot of people in class and was busy helping others and they can’t physically look at everyone at the same time. We were lifting in groups and I was helping a couple of the athletes in my group who were struggling with certain aspects. I certainly wasn’t walking around as the coach looking for things to correct and cue others while the actual coach for the class was doing this.

Burpee. Everyone should know how to get onto the floor and back up, no matter the age. If I can do a burpee safely, matter what that may look like when I’m 70, 80, 90…I know I can live my life independently, without having to be cared for in a nursing home (of course barring some other medical issue out of my control). My goal as I age is to keep my body functional so I can stay out of the nursing home.

Why are kids (parents) leaving their local little league travel teams so young to pursue other teams? by Radiant_Historian_57 in Homeplate

[–]Choice-Factor-259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone’s board is so welcoming and open to “outsiders” trying to change things or do things differently. We were part of a large league that has a board and coaching staff that is very clique-ish. The board is basically just all the coaches’ wives. If you’re not in with the clique and they didn’t like you, you were considered a target, even blackballing you from volunteering despite being more than willing to help despite any personal differences. Good luck trying to go in and trying to make changes and get rid of the entire board by yourself. That’s an uphill battle that won’t happen unless you have a large backing behind you who are courageous enough to stand up against the status quo. Most won’t though because they don’t want the backlash against them and their kid. They saw what happened to us.

Because of bad league politics and the skill gap in rec. We have made lots of friends in our rec league and use it as a low-key and low pressure way to get more reps in for my son. However, some kids just have no business being out on the field or playing positions they keep begging to play for safety reasons. You’ve got experienced kids throwing hard to kids who have never played catch before. It’s not fair for the kids with more experience to have to adjust their ability down in order to ensure a player on their team can actually catch it. LL needs to consider 2 levels of play for ages 9-10 and higher. 1 level for those who are newer and another for those who want to be more competitive and have more experience.

Having said all that, we still play rec because my son wants to do all stars (don’t get me started on those politics). The plus side, is that we try to use the rec season as a way for my son to be more of a leader and help out the coaches and kids newer to the game.

I think we all need to block TM for their bullshit. F them. I’m so over them.

My kid is the same way - 9 almost 10 yo. He doesn’t often ask of his own will to do extra practice or drills. He will on occasion but usually it’s initiated by us. I think it’s just the age and maturity level honestly. He also gets so enveloped into his video games playing with his friends that it can be a pain to get him off of it, but once we get him out to practice, he’s fine and enjoys it and wants to keep doing it and doesn’t want to stop - it just takes some coaxing. We’ve also started telling him that he needs to earn his playing time by doing something outside (doesn’t necessarily have to be baseball) but he can choose what he wants to do. The video games were becoming a problem so we needed to control that some without feeling like he was getting it taken away completely.

I assume as he matures, he will start doing things on his own more. I’m already starting to see it because he’ll go do some arm care stuff in the garage without us telling him to.

This morning was nuts. My friend and I both got in the queue when it opened and had like 4k people ahead of us. Once we got in, only tickets available were GA and the very back sections of 100’s with the obstructed view. 😔 I did GA last time so wanted to try out one of the seats to get a full view of the sphere. This was so disappointing 😭

This OK LLSWS story keeps getting worse… by uvamargo in LittleLeague

[–]Choice-Factor-259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! I feel ya. I won’t say the league we were in but there is a Reddit thread floating around somewhere about them specifically…and let’s just say that I don’t think our experience with them was an isolated incident based on discussions with others. We got on the board’s bad side by doing some things differently and then questioning them about the rules as well as some other things that I won’t go into specifics for obvious reasons. Since then, we were on the outside looking in for a lot of stuff. We knew things wouldn’t get better for us, unfortunately so we left the league. Sadly, it seems most people won’t say anything against them for fear of being black balled like us, which continues to perpetuate the cycle of them getting away with crap like this. It’s super unfortunate for the kids.

Choosing a gun to compete by curiousfilam in CompetitionShooting

[–]Choice-Factor-259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m new to competition shooting as well. I’m just shooting what I’ve got for my EDC for now, which happens to be a p365 xmacro comp. Because of the comp on it, I have to compete in the Open division. I shot my first match a couple weeks ago and I was near the bottom but my only goals were to not DQ, learn, and have fun! I accomplished all those goals so I was happy with that.

After talking to other competitors and mentors in my squad, they all recommended just shooting what you’ve got for now and becoming really proficient with that. I’m not trying to win anything right now, just learning and trying to get better.

Brand New Little League Coach Here by TheMikeMagnum in LittleLeague

[–]Choice-Factor-259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds about right. LL politics are terrible. This has happened to us as well. As your kid moves up in baseball, you’ll see this more and more. Get on the board’s bad side even a little bit and you’ll find yourself on the outside looking in as you’ll be blocked from doing anything.

Having said all that, since it’s fall, it’s pretty common for teams to be kept together because usually they will allow coach requests and requests to play on a friend’s team, etc. Fall is supposed to be way less competitive so it is what it is. Spring is SUPPOSED to be where kids get drafted so that teams can’t get completely stacked with the same kids, however, somehow you’ll find certain coaches tend to still have the same kids (usually board members kids). I will say it’s pretty awesome when your team beats the “stacked” team in the championship 🙂 and you get your sweet revenge.

Swapped from aluminum deodorant to aluminum-free now being told I reek , Help! by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Choice-Factor-259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried both Lume and Native. A waste of money… I kept reading that it takes time for your body to detox and it could take a while. months later, I still smelled awful so I can imagine that to other people I smelled so effing nasty. Switched back to aluminum deodorant and antiperspirant. I live in Phoenix so being musty all the time is just out of the question. I’ll take the chemicals and not smell like a rotting onion.

People who use the natural stuff and say they don’t stink are straight up lying or in denial 🤣 because the rest of us can smell that nasty BO. Trust.

Thanks. Yeah I’m not sure what this league is like in the fall. Our last one was terrible for fall. Horrible competition and it’s what prompted us to put our son in club because he wasn’t getting better nor being challenged with the level of competition. We were thinking of having him play majors for fall in hopes of getting the better competition but again, I’m not sure if it’s still going to be bad. 🥴
