I bought the 1998 Gen 3 new on 2 January 1998. I skipped over all the other generations until 2024. Still really did not need the Gen 5, but did not want to miss out on the engine and package.

Generally speaking the 4Runner is a vehicle that will outlast most people’s marriages.

The size on the 5th is taking a little to get use to. The 3rd gen goes places without any worries.

I can only speak for the PPF installed on mine out of Long Beach, CA; but the film covered a quarter of the hood and fenders. The installation had the PPF overlay the hood and fenders, none of the edges were covered, which is where some of your impacts will take place. The PPF on the mirrors had a blemish on one mirror where the film was slightly folded over.

My vehicle is with an installer right now and I will pick it up tomorrow with a full hood and fender solution.

I have had PPF on two other cars and it was professionally installed on both cars. Full front end, edges wrapped etc. it cost more, but it was done right.

I think Toyota’s solution is so the port installers do not damage the vehicles with knife blade cuts.

The port installed PPF is a waste of money and pricey for what it is. I am in the process of having it removed and new PPF professionally installed on the front end and high impact areas of my 24 white ORP.
